Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

Craftsman 15.5 lawn tractor (917.271061) won't start

When turning the key to start the tractor, nothing happens -- engine does not kick over. The needle on tractor's amp meter drops all of the way to the left when the key is turned on. The battery is fine -- I put it into my neighbor's Craftsman tractor and it started fine. Where do I start troubleshooting this?

On a side note, how can I get my hands on a service manual for this tractor? I can't find anything online anywhere.

If the battery is fully charged and it won't turn over more than once or twice, it is an indication that the ACR (automatic compression release) is not working. It may not be working because the overhead valves need adjusting. They need adjusting periodically to enable the engine to turn over correctly at startup. One of the valves opens slightly on the compression stroke when the ACR is operating right. If the valve lash is incorrect, so will the ACR. Here is the how-to on adjusting the valves. It is very easy. You will be surprised. Scroll down to "Adjusting Overhead Valves" on this page.

19.5 hp twin craftsman serial number 917259560 turn key nothing happens battery new, switch uner seat in ok position

Check that the blades are not engaged. If they are not engaged and you still have nothing, check battery cables tight. Then check the starting solinoid.

If you have any questions on how to do this or other related, just reply.

Could be, but test each item with your tester. Test key switch (12V in and 12 V out when turned to start., operator present switch 12V in 12V out (seat) Clutch switch, etc. till finally you test for 12V on the small terminal on the starter solonoid. Happy testing!

Check your seat, drive safety switches. Can you turn the engine with jumper cables attached to the starter? It won't start, but should turn over, one of your safety switches is not working.

1 Answer

Difficult to start -- bad kill switch?

You have 3 safety switches located on the tractor, any one of which can cause the tractor to not crank over.
I assume the deck lever is not engaged, you are sitting in the seat and you push the clutch down when trying to start?
Start by lifting the seat and disconnecting the seat switch, push the clutch in and try to start.
Start there and we'll go from there.
