SOURCE: White Smoke comming out of Briggs and Stratton 21 HP V2 engine.
The white smoke may have been caused by having water in the fuel, or fuel tank [due to condensation or exposure to rain and snow]. It may have been that the mower got tipped for cleaning purposes, blade inspection, etc. and oil from the low lying oil pan got into the piston.
Either way, I recommend installing a brand new spark plug and new gasoline [you can purchase a little gas siphoning hose for a dollar or so at any auto parts store] If you have gasoline left over in a can from last year it is safe to use it in your car as it mixes with lots of new gas, but not in your small mower tank as it is basically outdated fuel.

SOURCE: Fuel in tank going into engine and mixing with oil
The float needle and seat are leaking and not shutting off the fuel when carb bowl if full. It then flows down the intake into the cylinder, past the rings and into the crankcase. Have the needle and pressed-in brass seat replaced. Could save yourself some money if you removed the carb yourself and took it in.

SOURCE: Briggs and Stratton 22hp v twin OHV smoking badly
First thing to do is pull your dipstick and check for broken or missing O-ring also as you pull it, look to make certain that it was seated properly and all the way locked. If either condition exists, you will be leaking into the crankcase which will cause your symptoms

SOURCE: timing for briggs and stratton 15.5 engine
There are no timing marks, timing is correct when the flywheel key is in place, the flywheel is properly torqued and the air gap for the magneto is properly set
