First and foremost, remove the spark plug wire. Turn mower on it's side, find the right size socket for the bolt in center of blade that holds the blade. If it wont loosen spray with WD-40 and let soak a while, then try again. Once loosend remove old blade, clean bottom of deck where blade fastened, then replace new blade and thoroughly tighten as tight as possible without stripping. Return to upright position and allow to set for 45 minutes to allow oil to drain back into the crankcase to prevent damage. Then reattach spark plug wire to spark plug. Do not attempt to start until oil has had time to return to the crankcase. Do not forget to remove spark plug wire before you attempt to replace a blade.

Unscrew holding bolt, while holding blade. Good idea to pull plug wire. Ratchet works best.

You find the right size socket that fits it.(it: the bolt in the middle of the blade under the mower. Then hold the blade as you turn the socket wrench, sometimes this will be hard. this is how to do it

My 21: self propelled yardworks lawnmower leaves a strip of grass about one thiird from the left hand side of the mower when i mulch with it. When I bag it works good.

I'd check your blade and see if it needs sharpening. The mulching mowers need to cut then vacuum the grass up and then cut it again. They must be properly sharpened for this process to work properly.

I cannot stop electric motor and drive shaft and blade from turning when trying to take blade retaining nut off to sharpen blade.

The safest way to do this is to use a blade holder that you may be able to purchase from a parts store. It clamps to the side of your mower deck and keeps the blade from turning.

Maybe try removing that blade and checking it/sharpening it. You could also install a new blade or a 21" mulching blade that is designed a little different, giving a different cutting process and results. When the grass comes out by the left front wheel, have you shut the mower down and checked for any kind of grass build up under the deck?

The straight blade for the 42 inch mower is 138971.They cut better and are easier to sharpen and you will need them if you use a gass catcher. If you do not want to use sears for parts you may be able to find good deals on ebay.

I need to get the blade of the lawn mower sharpened.Any tips on how to disconnect the blade fropm the lawn mower?

There is a jig that you can buy that makes this job SO much eaiser. It is a universal jig that clamps onto the deck and keeps the blade from spinning so you can use a ratchet to remove the nut holding the blade on. One name brand is called a "Blade Hog". You should be able to find one of these at one of the bog box hardware stores.

Hope this helps,

Most lawn mower mfgs offer a mulching kit which usually consists of a metal plate to block the discharge opening and a mulching blade which just has a longer sharpenned cutting edge.
With a little labor you can make your own.
