Freezer and refrig not cooling right

Freezer is working but not 100%, cooling to 8 degrees. Refrig is not cooling appropriately, staying at 50 degrees. Back wall of freezer has about 1/2 inch ice on it. This has increased the past couple of days. I had a cpuple of puddles of water in front of the refrig but thought it was the animals spilling. It is a Kichenaid , freezer on top looks like it was made in 1994. I would love to be ble to fix it if possible and not to costly. Thank you, Cindy A

HI, your self defrosting is not working. You would need a voltage/ohms meter to test this. Do you have a meter?

The first thing you want to check is the defrost bi-metal switch and the defrost heater. Both of these parts are located behind the rear panel in the freezer. You will need to check continuity on the bi-metal
switch when it is cold. This is the nost common praoblem. If you get no continuity, replace the switch. You can also test the defrost heater the same way but, it does not have to be cold.
If both the switch and heater have continuity, you will need to replace the defrost timer.

Cindy, Is what you are seeing frost or solid ice building up. Sounds like frost if it is that thick. Please do not change the thermostat unlessit is the defrost thermost (Bi-metal)

Fridge and freezer at 50 degrees with settings on max cold. I can hear compressor cycling and all power is on. Suggestions?

Your Refrig/freezer should be set as follows:

Refrigerators: 36 to 40 degrees. Ideal temp is 37 Fahrenheit. Note: A temp above 42 degrees promotes bacteria.

Freezer: temp should be -5 to 6 degrees Fahrenheit. Ideal temp is 0 degrees.

Then check the door seals around the edges to see if any splits, tears or cracks have messed up the seal. This will cause your compressor to constantly run as it's trying to cool off the warm house is being sucked into the freezer (or Refrig). A sure sign the door seals are damaged is lots of ice in the freezer door area or water pooling in the bottom area of the refrigerator.

Wait about 4 hrs after you readjusted the Refrigerator/Freezer settings so everything settles down. If you still have problems then the coolant may need to be serviced (topped off) or the motor serviced/checked.

Don't procrastinate because a water heater and Refrig/freezer are the 2 largest energy users in your home- they run 24 hrs a day.

Hope this helps...

Frigidaire refrigerator with a broken freezer

He is correct. The temp in the refrig controls how often and for how long the refrig runs. Lets say the temp in your garage is 34 degrees, and you have your refrig set to 36 degrees: The refrig will never run, the fresh foods section will cool to 34, and the freezer will warm to 34. Even if the temp is 45 in the garage and you set the fresh foods to be 33, the refrig will not need to run long enough and often enough to keep the freezer temp cold enough. You will most likely need to have the ambient room temp at least 55 degrees to get satisfactory refrigerator performance. Insulating the refrig will not help. (by the way, outdoor beverage vending machines use an internal heater in cold weather to prevent liquid beverages inside from freezing,..... so using that info, you could put a low wattage heater in your refrig to make your refrig run enough to make the freezer section work. The %&#* with that, just move it into the house!)

New whirlpool refrig. freezer ok at 0 but refrig

The freezer get the first crack at cooling and combination units have a fan and adjustable vents to steal some of the cooling capacity for the refrigerator. The vent are normally located in the back of the refrigerator compartment and with these, you can balance the cooling capacity between freezer and fridge. I recommend you swap your thermometer back and forth until you get the balance you want; typically the freezer should be at 5 degrees F or below and the fridge at 35-40 degrees F. Adjusting the control for temperature and having the vents set to supply the cold air you want in each compartment should give you the range you want in each.

Temperature 94 in refrig. normal in freezer

Check to see if refrigerator door is lower than freezer door. If so remove toe panel, (bottom front). Under refrigerator door hinge at bottom right is adjuster for door. Adjust upward so door is even. On some models when door is too low it causes light to stay on some times, raising ref. temps.

Kenmore top freezer unit-refrig not cooling past 50degrees

check freezer for frost build up and if fan blowing, check condenser make sure clean, and fan blowing, check vents in refrig. make sure no blockage, freezer control should be in the middle setting, you can try turning that to Warmer freezer allowing MORE air to refrigertor side.
