Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional With Servise Pack 2 (e8503040) for PC

Service packs not cleaning up properly

Hi guys, i have just noticed a few things after a recent reformat, invoked by a bad driver

this is regarding Windows XP Service Packs

first of all, when i run the discs, my external hard drive is being targeted for file extraction instead of my main drive and so it takes longer to install than normal, my external hard drive has been assigned to D:

second, when the service pack has finished installing, it does not clean up the files properly, so by the time i finished installed SP2 and SP3 i end up with at least 10GB of unneccessary files on my external hard drive

any way to stop this happening in future?

all help appreciated

Windows Update is choosing the drive-letter (C: or D:) with the "most" available disk-space. So, move (copy then delete) some files from C: to D: to make more space on C:

All those "temporary" folders can be deleted.

(sited from http://www.winxptutor.com/randomfolders.htm)

When you install Windows XP SP1, SP1a or SP2, this temporary folder is created on the volume that has the most free space. The folder name contains random characters, and is not always created on the same volume as the Windows folder. For example, this temporary folder may have the following random names:
9470bb12e8a4f3447657236478e41c5
or similar.
352b81d1c4bf3810e28482d9979

This folder is automatically deleted by Windows XP after you install the service pack. However, if the folder is not automatically deleted by Windows XP, you can safely delete this folder.

Please Note:
In most cases, you will receive an Access denied message while accessing or deleting this folder. First, you'll need to Take Ownership of the folder and then delete it safely.

What OP System do you have , XP, VISTA. . . . ect?

I am a MCP and have many service packs and drivers that I can e-mail you, and if this is winXP, then install Service Pack 2, re-boot and it should automatically find the software and install it itself.
I would not go Higher that SP2 for it makes your computer go slower and slower as time goes by. As VISTA is a nightmare to get some driver's for, I do have quite a few from other tec's.

Go back into Device Manager. Click on the "+" sign where you saw the yellow!. This will bring up your device. Right click on it and click on "Update Driver". Also, you can uninstall driver, reboot and your Plug and Play will load driver. Sometimes that is all it needs.

Query regarding mic support in Windows Vista

Yes you do indeed need to have Vista Drivers, That said sometimes the XP drivers MAY work if they and the software are installed in XP Compatibility Mode. Vista has been a nightmare for us in the Computer repair industry... one can only hope that all driver issues are addressed in any service packs to come? I doubt it tho...It seems a case of out with the old and in with the new...wheather ya like it or not.
