You have to remove the engine (4 bolts, no big problem), then remove the bolt in the center of the pulleys, then remove the pulleys. Slip the belt(s) (2 if you have the Super Bronco model) onto the pulleys, re-attach the pulleys with the bolt, re-mount the engine, and you're home free.

Go to this website and type in Horse for your model number.Just put thenumber 1 in for your serial number and it will bring up several horse tiller manuals. If yours is a 1976 then it should be
a Horse I model. This should be a two speed tiller and have two drive belts.

How does the gear box come apart on a six horse troy built tiller?

  1. Remove belt guard on left side
  2. Remove belt, large pulley on gearbox.
  3. Remove throttle cable, idler pulley cable and shift handle.
  4. Remove engine, handle, wheels, tines cover and tines.
  5. Lay gearbox on side on two sawhorses, left side facing up
  6. Remove all the nuts on that side. If the three shafts have corrosion, use sandpaper to remove.
  7. Pry the two halves apart, then hammer the ends of the three shafts to push through their bushings. Use brass or wood to avoid blossoming the shaft ends. When shafts are through their bushings, the right side will fall away.

Drive shaft is stuck and will not drive tines, Troy Bilt Tiller

If it is the shaft and not the belt, you will probably have to take the tynes off the axle and clean and lube them. It may also be the differential, I would check that first. Good luck...Lee

My troy built keeps eating the forward drive belt?

Had one do that not long ago. The problem was the idler pulley that pushes against the belt when you pull the engage lever on the handle was not lined up with the belt. I just bent the idler bracket to line up the pulley with the belt. Maybe this will help, assuming you have the same model.

The tines on my troy built Horse tiller do not grb when tilling. Are the gears in the drive shaft the problem? How do you fix this?

Since there is no grinding noise, if the problem is in the gear box it isn't too severe. There is a slight possibility that a tooth or two has been broken off one of the gears. But it sounds more like you have a worn drive belt. Most of the time when the tines don't grab or they slip it is because the drive belt have become worn in some way. If it is suppose to be a one-half inch wide belt it could have thinned to a three-eight inch allowing the belt to drop further into the pulley than needed, or it may be "sloppy", not tightening enough to operate the tines if it has stretched. The right belt is very important and is an easy fix. I hope this helps.

How to take motor off frame troy built tiller

The easiest way is to first remove the drive belt , then on both sides you will see two bolts with locking nuts on them where the engagement lever raises the motor to tighten the belt. Back these bolts out , then have someone hold the motor while you work the rod out on each side that the motor slides up and down on. Oh if you have a bumper there are two bolts in the top of each one holding the bumper on to take out first. Hope this helps.

How to lock drive shaft to change reverse disk?

I just changed the belts on my tiller, and had the same problem..The manual says to be on the left side of machine and with a box end wrench on the bolt, "hit with a hammer"..use a brass or lead hammer..
This sometimes works, but you still have to tighten it when you are done!
My tiller has electric start, so the easy way was to remove starter and position a piece of wood against the ring gear.

Changing the drive belt

remove plastic belt cover
remove the guard,belt/pulley
work in the right side first:
remove the rigth-side wheel
remove the screws of the bumper
remove 2 screws on bracket/transmission assembly
pull the bracket
install the new belt
reinstall the right side screws and wheel

do the same in the left side
Ps: remove the belt guide, and reverse return spring
