i did. im pretty good with computers so i know the bios and stuff but this one is giving me trouble. ive tried different hard drives. i think i hooked up an external dvd drive to try that. i dont know what else to do. i read somewhere to try and pull the little battery on the motherboard for a few minutes and that did nothing

You need to go into setup or your BIOS and set the boot sequence as 1- floopy, 2- cd 3- hard drive, exit and restart and your machine should boot up the xp cd.
good luck

you might need to go to www.microsoft.com/hcl/ and do a compatibility check to see if your computer hardware will run xp.

try that and let me know

    good luck

Are you sure you went into you BIOS and changed the settings for you boot sequence, you should only have to do it once, because it wont change by itself.

  • Keith Petersen May 21, 2009

ok im thinking that maybe you have a bad cd that wont work on auto run. do you know anyone who has a copy of xp that you can borrow, if you do try another cd and see if you can get it to boot off of it, if you can just use the product key that came with you bad cd

then make a copy of the one you borrowed .

I dont think you should take the battery out at this point unless you have a backup of your bios on floppy.

im sure you get this figured out, please let me know

    thanks

have you checked in your device manager to see if there are any issues with your cd/dvd player, if not you might check there and while there try and update the driver for that hardware

  • Keith Petersen May 21, 2009

well if you cant find anything wrong in your device manager you may have a corrupt bios

you might try pressing f12 on boot and see if it will give you your boot options.

i dont know what else to tell you,

i have a dinner engagement so im going to be off line for awhile, ill check my mail later. let me know if youve made any headway on this

    thanks

I had one more thought, when you restart, you should get a message on your screen to hit any key to boot from cd, and i was thinking that maybe this isnt showing because of some reason or other, so why dont you try again and soon as you hit the start button just start tapping any key on the keyboard and see if it will boot off of the cd.

it might be worth a try if you havnt already tried this.

let me know if i can help.

    thanks

one more thing you might try, thats if you have another cd/dvd player around, you might try switching them and see if you can get your cd to boot off of it.

you would have to removed the hard drive and possibly buy the external adaptor for your hard drive then plug it in to another computer via USB and reformat the hard drive..

Im sure the boot sector is a mess. If the cd wont fix the boot sector you may have to copy all his personal files from dos and restore the computer to factory settings.

No boot device available- strike F1 to retry boot F2 for setup utility

you can try this steps to resolve your issue:
1. clean your disc drive with white cloth and alcohol
2. try to re-install the OS
3. if this won't work try to download another boot disk like EBCD
or ask a friend to create you a boot disc and try to boot your computer with it.

- This can rule out or confirm a Bad Windows OS disc, thus let's you install you Windows OS in the process.

4. try to re-install again the OS
