My freezer won't get below four degrees. What can I do

It sounds like the coolant is not circulating properly or the compressor is faulty. See if you can get access to the back of the freezer and touch the compressor motor but be careful. If it is very hot I would think it is one of the above and a service engineer needs to be called.

Master-Bilt commercial freezer Bearings

If you can access the condenser fan, jam it with a screwdriver handle so it can't revolve. switch on and see if the noise still appears. If not, change the fan motor. If so, change the compressor.. Don't let the compressor run without the fan operating more than to test for the noise.

My fridge is not cooling, compressor starts and goes off within 20 seconds is it due to the thermostat problem?

Hello,

That could be caused by the thermostat, to see if that is the problem your would need to gain access to thermostat, remove the wires to it and check for low resistiance using a meter,if the reading on the meter shows anymore that 5 ohms resistiance the t-stat is bad.
A more common cause of that is the relay attached to the compressor is burnt out, a relay/overload kit could be purchased from your local appliance parts store for usually under $40.00

I hope my answer has helped,

I had a flood in the basement where I keep my Frigidaire freezer, model FFU17FC5W3, which left 4 inches of water on the ground. The following day I drained the basement and dried it up and the freezer was...

Hello,

Welcome to FixYa.

Likely just the start device, the compressor is a sealed unit so the water would not have affected it.

Here's what I'd suggest you try...

If you feel like you can trouble shoot further I`ve provided the following info to assist you or you may decide to call a professional appliance technician as I would suggest.

I don`t know the age of your fridge, but I should mention...

** Most of the manufacturers of fridges have 5 to 10 years sealed system warranty which would include the compressor but not the electrical starting devices i.e., the overload & relay. Check your owners manual, it is the ultimate authority on warranty no matter what anyone else tells you according to.**

If you have a multi- meter you can check the compressor to see if the windings are ok.

**First, Unplug the fridge**

Remove the panel at the back down at the bottom. This should gain you access to the compressor.

On the side of the compressor will be the start relay/overload assembly such as this image...it may be enclosed in a black plastic cover as well.

Pull off the relay & overload and you'll see 3 pins in the form of a triangle...

ffd3e9e.jpg
With a meter measure between any 2 pins at one time, going between each pin with one remaining on a "common" pin.

You'll want 3 measurement's, similar to this example- 6ohms, 3ohms, and 9ohms.

On some meters you may simply get a reading of "0" ohms, as long as the needle moves off of "infinity" which would indicate an "open" winding=not good !

If following that, the readings are good, purchase a hard start kit. Part # HS410 also known as a 3in1 starter kit.

i.e.

775ec2d.jpg

The above package contains info and hardware on how to connect it.

NOTE : the HS410 ( 3 in 1 ) should be considered just a temporary "fix" as opposed to an actual "repair" in should not be relied on for long term reliability or safety, but rather thefactory replacemnet, double check with your model number.

Hope that help`s move you forward if nothing else. If so please take a second and rate the reply and a testimony to your inquiry you received here at FixYa.

Thank you and good luck.

Regards,

Macmarkus :)

My 2yr old electrolux freezer just died. The food were defrosted and I think the compressor stopped working, I shut off and restarted the freezer but nothing happens. The light is on just the motor not...

Thermostat is most common, the next is the starter on the compressor, or the (if it has one) defrost timer has failed, I can guide you to see if the timer has failed, first of all, pull the unit away from the wall and gain access to where the compressor is located, you may have to lay on the floor to get a good view, look for a small box located on the cabinet in the compressor recess, if you see this box, you will notice a small circular dial within this box, get a suitable object and turn this dial clockwise, if this is the problem, your freezer will magically burst into life and you will need to replace this timer or the internal thermo switch, if it does nothing or you cant locate the box, suggest you start with the thermostat and work down, if you have no luck, give me a call on 08 9523 0552. Amana side by side model ssd22nl. compressor runs and runs, but the evaporator fan does not come on. what would cause this problem?

Hi, If the evaporator fan in the freezer is not running, more then likely the motor has failed. The compressor will run and run because the thermostat control is never satisfied. If you have a volt meter you can check to see it there is power to the motor, 120 volts, but I would say that if it does not run, it is faulty and you must remove and replace it. If you do this on your own, take out the old motor and write down all of the information you can from the unit also. Model, serial, and name of unit. This will help if the appliance parts house needs to cross it over to a different motor. Keep me posted.
Sincerely,

Freeezer with no compressor activity

If all fans are running, but not compressor You could try to install 3 N 1 start kit, thats might help 50/50. If it will start compressor - be ready for compressor to go out soon. might work for a year.

Freezer attempts to start but after a few seconds trips out

There is a relay and protector, these are where the wires attach to the compressor,or rather how the power wires attach to the compressor. You can purchase a 3n1 start kit which has the instructions with it. Be sure to unplug the freezer before touching the wires or attempting to install replacement parts.
