SOURCE: How to get 1080p?
in addition many TV service providers are unable to send a true HD signal. the max is 720p or 1080i as refered to above. some sattelite companies are beginning to dabble in it but nothing full swing as of yet.

If your Sony TV is designed to display 1080P resolution - you don't need to do anything. It does it automatically synchronizing with appropriate 1080P signal source.
If source does not produce 1080P (because it can't or settings are wrong) TV won't display it.

SOURCE: how to change my display
The resolution is dictated by the video source, if it is fed with 720p, you will get 720p res, feed it with 1080p will display 1080p, just like your PC monitor which is controlled by your PC video card resolution setting, not at the monitor.

SOURCE: picture is only in 720p
You can use the TVs original remote or if you use a universal or programmed remote just make sure the remote is on TV.
Then you just have to press menu. In the menu select a setting such as Screen or Display or something to this same idea and it will allow you to select the picture output. It should list all hte possiblities for your TV including the 1080p.
Hope this helps. If it did not answer your question please reply back and I will gladly walk you through the process further.
Please rate me well if this was helpful so others will know to ask me for help. Thanks again and I hope everything works out with your TV.
