How old is the mower? Is it OHV or flathead? Does it burn oil? Low compression in these small engines is usually caused by bad rings. Try putting one-half teaspoon of motor oil in the cylinder, crank the engine without the spark plug in, replace the spark plug and try to start the engine. If it starts and runs, then the rings need to be replaced. By putting oil in the cylinder, you re-seal the rings to the cylinder wall, this is only temporary. Deglaze the cylinder wall and replace the rings and you should be good to go.

SOURCE: My Honda GXV 160 is

Before you spend time and money on Buds solution I had exactly the same symptom .If it starts first pull when the engine is warm it is not a fuel or spark problem ,it will be the choke,on mine when the choke lever was full on it did not opperate the choke enough as the cable goes to choke it turns the metal bit clock wise but the metal choke will bend over time and will not be opening the choke just carefully bend the metal bit with some pliers so when the cable is on choke it now actuly opens the choke,it will now start first time when cold ,try this first before you strip apart the carburetor,I liked buds solution may be you might like mine !

Depends where it is leaking from, wash it off to see where it is coming from, it may well be the bottom crankcase seal, once the blade and carrier are removed you should gain acess to this, if it is leaking you will need to remove the seal and replace.

Why won't it start?

Hi, Donna your compression is too low either from extremely worn rings or bent or burnt valve you need at least 80 lbs. Good luck and have a nice day.

# 1 cylender not firing, low presure in that cylender, not buring oil

Low pressure I'm assuming you mean low compression. Do a "wet test" first. If compression is still low, check your valve adjustments. tight valves will cause low compression. Also has this engine been overheated badly,or have excessive mileage on it? Could be a head gasket, or damaged rings/cylinders.

Will bad rings in my yz85 cause low compression. If so by how much? Other than the piston ring and cylinder, what else could cause low compression.

Low compression is cause by a number of things. First a blown head gasket or loose head studs second burnt or bent valves or loose valve seat inserts. thirdly a hole in the top of the pistons from detonation or incorrect timing. Next broken rings and a scored bore will lower compression. Lastly an over heated engine will soften the rings material and they will no longer contact the bore to seal off the pistons. Blocked air filter will be a cause and carrying out the compression test with out holding the throttle wide open will also cause low compression readings

GXV 160 Honda, spark plug very sooty, when pulling to start it fires back through carb, have reset valve clearances which were near good enough but wondered about timing or poorly seating valves

you need to do a cylinder leak down test. That will tell you if it is a valve, which one or if it is rings. Try a compression test too. 5 pulls should be 160 to 190 ish. If all that is ok check the carb to see why it is causing a rich running scenario

I have a constant miss in my engine. I've changed the wiring, cap & rotor, plugs and fuel filter. What could be the problem?

Have you performed a compression check? You could have a sticking or Mal-adjusted valve, bad cylinder or other problem -- the test would reveal your answers more precisely...

1988 XR 250r smoking and blowing oil out tailpipe, compression 120, cylinder walls in great shape, what should I look for?

The compression is low. This indicates bad piston rings. The cylinder may look okay but chances are the cylinder wall has low spots. I suggest you have the shop bore the cylinder and install a first oversize piston and rings. Since the head is already off, I would re-seat the valves and install new valve guide seals. With proper compression the bike will be noticeably stronger.

# 4 cylinder 30 lbs compression

it indicates a sticking valve or lifter. you will have to do a leak down test to rule out the piston rings for that cylinder. most engines should have 140 to 160 cranking compression. a low compression on one cylinder indicates a bad exhaust valve. have a good day !!

I have a problem with lots of oil smoke in the exhaust, also burnt oil coming out of the exhaust vent hole. Also the kick start doesnt work now...

It could be that the compression rings went bad and getting what is called blow by, or the valve guide seal. if you can get your hand on a compression tester check the compression. you can check the compression by removing the spark plug and inserting the tester I don't know exactly what the psi is but should be at least 100 plus and within 20% of each cylinder. If you find that the compression is low, with a oil can squirt some oil into the spark plug hole that is bad. If the compression rises then it's probably the piston ring if not the valve seal is probably bad. 2006 shouldn't have that problem kinda new. get back to me

I just bought 96 xr600 from original owner, in imaculate hardly used condition, verified 2188miles. It has substatial power, but low compression 85psi, adjusted the valves they were slightly tight -.005,...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If the bike has adequate power just go ahead and ride it. Chances are it will get better from use. The rings are probably sticking in the ring grooves creating the low compression. A shot of WD-40 in each spark plug hole, left sitting overnight may help the free up the rings. The brand of oil does not matter much. Just be certain to NOT use synthetics or oils with "Special" additives. They can swell or shrink the cork on the clutch friction plates. Now you need new plates.
