Burning smell + Screeching sound but Belt is not the cause, then WHAT is?

I have the same problem with the belt burning.
The old belt stgarted delaminating and causing a noise, so I replaced it. I started the machine and it agatated properly,
when it started the spin cycle it burned the new belt off..
I noticed that when the old belt broke the tub seemed tol be stuck, so I turned it boac anf forth. filled it up with water to mac capacity and started the spin cycle and it spun and pumped the water out fine. Could it be the brake sticking?

That is no solution! I put a Maytag replacement belt on it!

Saying yes that could be it is like saying the car may not start, the brake is a very expensive part and buying it on mybe would be stupid. That is why I contacted a socalled expert!

This is an unaceptable solution, something I better not get charged for!!

I have the same problem with the belt burning. The old belt started delaminating and causing a noise, so I replaced it,but before I replaced it I rocked the tub clockwise and counterclockwise a couple of times, then filled it to max water level and it went through the spin cycle and pumped the water out fin.I relpaced the belt with a maytag belt. I started the machine and it agatated properly, when it started the spin cycle it burned the new belt off.I then put the machine onits side and rhe drive pully turned with very little force in both directions.

Yes actually it is the braking mechanism that causes friction and the belt gardually due to friction starts
corroding to such an extent that release burning fume but the point to be noted is that if this problem persists for long it would affect the motors performance and also there is a chance of coil burn that would lead to replacement of motor to fix this issue check on the braking and also check the spinner base that might require some lube

Sounds like the belt may need to be changed. it eh pulley are spinning but the belt is not, nothing will spin and the friction of the pulley against the belt will cause a burning rubber smell

Check to see if your water pump is spinning. It could be seized up and the burning smell could be the belt spinning on the seized pulley. Good luck Friend.

My dryer is making an awful sound and smells like something is burning. could the belt be broken even though it is only 6 months old?

If your belt was not put on correctly it could be rubbing on something causing both the noise and the burning smell. If you don't know how to check this, you need to have the service person come back and take a look at it.

Hey Mike - I'm the 2001 Outback wagon owner... you said you think a belt went - would that cause such an array of problems? burning brakes smell, battery light on, steering limited, screeching brakes...

If one of the pulley or alternator seized up (would cause belt screeching and smell) finally let go(pop sound) then none of the accessory drives working (no belt).

The burning rubber smell may be a slipping belt; as the belt slips it will literally overheat to a point it has a burning smell (it will not burst in to flames though) The belt I would expect, given you issue, is that of the power steering pump. If the pump is beginning to sieze (not wanting to turn) the belt may begin to spin on the pump pulley. Curious if you have any noise of the belt slip, typically a high-pitched squeal? If the belt is slipping it should have a glazed or shinny look to it. In writting I come to think that just the belt itself may be old/worn, not to proper tension and causing the issue. In short if this is the issue it may be as simple of replacing the belt and put to proper tension or poosibly the power steering pump has begun to fail. The attached image may help

I hope this may have assisted you,

Won't spin on spin cycle, smells of something burning.

sounds like the belt or the tub bearings are shot. It is likely that the motor is spinning and the tub is not, causing the belt to burn.

Burning smell + Screeching sound but Belt is not the cause, then WHAT is?

A lot of people may be searching for help with horrible sounds and burned belts for Maytag and Admiral washers only a few years old from Home Depot etc. They used a cheap pump that has a corrugated sheetmetal ring that holds the bearings. Well as it runs the vibration and friction cause it to slip down and grind on the pulley as well as not turn easily. If you put the washer on it's back and turn the small pulley and it turns with a gritty feel or you can actually see a loose metal collar type ring thing that looks like a cookie cutte; then you have a bad pump.

There is a small access panel on the back of the washer. Three screws and two spring clips on the hoses and you're done (use big pliers on the hoses). Put the belt back on (just push motor to one side, it's not tight), then check for leaks and reinstall the cover. VOILA! You can find the pump on ebay for $25 or your local GE parts dealers for $50.
