Question about Dell Inspiron E1505 Notebook

1 Answer

Bad motherboard I've been told that the motherboard is bad on my Dell Inspiron E1505 that is less than 2 years old. I thought it was the power cord because sometime it would charge and sometimes it wouldn't. Now it is dead. My question, if I replace the motherboard, will that fix the power problem and will it wipe my laptop set up clean or will it be the same as before we couldn't power it up anymore? I thought it was just the powerport going bad so I bought a docking station that charges through the Express slot but that isn't working either. Help!

Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for the power conversion unit on a laptop to go bad. I've seen this more with IBM/Lenovo ThinkPad's than with Dell Inpspiron's, but that's simply because I've had more experience with IBM/Lenovo.
A motherboard replacement shouldn't affect your data or your configuration, so I say go for it, especially if you are still pleased with the laptop's performance.

But watch the costs. If it is out of warranty and you have someone do it for you, you are likely going to approach the cost of a new (or newer) replacement. The only advantage is, you won't be spending the hours necessary to transfer your data and load your apps on a new(er) computer.

It's possible to replace it yourself, if you are so inclined, and save the labor costs. If you search around you can find online documentation showing you how.

NOTE: Personal habits play a part in how long batteries and the power conversion unit last. Many don't realize that it is actually GOOD for a battery to be drained regularly. And while most laptops bypass the battery once fully charged, keeping a battery 'pushed' to 100% can decrease the longevity of a battery by as much as 30%. Some battery 'optimizers' utilities, like the one provided with earlier IBM/Lenovo models, actually stop the charging process short of 100% to prevent battery overheating, which also spares the conversion unit.

Dell inspiron elec cord isn't firm so power turns off

Maybe it's the DC Jack that the power cord plugs into. If the jack is loose then you will experience the issue you are having.

Maybe your DC Power Jack which is where the power cord plugs into the computer is bad. Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.

Dell Inspiron 6000 (approx 4 years old) has an issue with the power cord internal connection? Battery and Power cord/adapter are fine. Computer constantly switches from battery to AC when powered on. ...

The input jack that is soldered to the motherboard (where the AC jack plugs in) probably has a cold solder joint. Thus the laptop switches from battery to AC power. You can try to have the solder joints
re-soldered.

The power module in your motherboard is malfunctioning. Is the Dell notebook less than a year old? If so, go to www.dell.com and click on Support and go through the process to get an RMA code. You will then be told how to send the notebook back for repair. It will probably take at least 10 working days. If the notebook is over a year old, contact you local computer repair or go to eBay to look into getting a new motherboard. Perhaps, it's time to look for a new PC; they make them to fail these days. You are lucky if you get to 2 years in many cases.

Dell Inspiron E1505 won't recognize new battery

It won't charge or work correctly if it's not the correct one and of the right voltage etc.I don't know how the battery even went in if it's not the Dell specified battery. If it went in and looked to fit maybe the battery itself is bad but its hard to say.

Here are my recommendations for this issue:

1. Reseat the battery.
2. Remove All External Components
3. Check the battery connectors on the battery and the system. Examine the connector on the battery and the system. Make sure that there is no physical damage and that it is clear of debris.
4. Remove All External Components
5. Try a known-good battery in the system, if available.
