Question about Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop Computer

1 Answer

OS will not initialize, cd/dvd-rom not accessible in Dos.

I have a Dell insperion 530 desktop (All drives are SATA) with a blank Os partition. I want to install an operating system. When I boot to Dos (with a startup floppy), the dvd player (an OPTIARC 7200S SATA)is not accessible. The BIOS sees the device but in dos it does not appear as a valid drive. How can I access the cd/dvd drive in dos? A tedious as it was, I put windows 98 on the hdd via the A drive. When it tries to start windows, the process stops when the windows drivers try to load and says "There is insuuficient memory to initialize windows" due to a TSR of some kind using the available memory. The program that is launching this TSR is not Identified. It reccomends closing the program that launched the TSR or editing the config.sys or autoexec.bat file so that the offending program will not start up again when I turn the P.C. on again. So... I need to somehow get my cd/dvd to work in dos so I can try another OS, or find out which particular program is stopping the launch of the one I,ve managed to put in place. My brain is about to explode. Any Ideas?

Thanks Hank, I appreciate your response. However,I cant do these things until I can get the P.C. to access the cd/dvd-rom in DOS. I think there may have been a Dell utility on the drive that would help but since the hdd was blanked I no longer have that option. If I can get the P.C. to Recognize the cd/dvd as a valid drive in Dos, I think I can take care of all the other problems myself.

Again, I thank you for your response. It is not my intention to use dos as the main OS. I just need to use the cd\dvd drive to load XP. Thus far I have been unable to get the computer to recognize the cd\dvd drive as a valid drive. The BIOS DOES SEE the drive. nevertheless, No Startup floppy I have tried gives me anything but A: C: D: Ramdrive. So I cannot load XP until I can get the thing to startup with a recognized cd drive. Therein lies my problem. The only way into the P.C. is the Floppy drive. I'll check out the website you mentioned. I do appreciate your efforts.

I would re-format the hard drive. Then install your main OS such as XP or 98. ( Best to do XP first). Then during installation you can set up your partitions or use Partition Magic.

Then you will have other partions to load other operationg systems. One OS in each different partition.

Then use Acronis Disc Director. On startup Acronis loads a screen and lets you choose what OS you want to use. Just click the icon and away you go.

I have xp, windows 98, and Dos 6.0 on my system in three different partitions.

Good luck

May have double posted. Sorry (internet problem)

You have sata drives, and a high tech computer. There is no way you can put DOS as a main OS on your system. You should do what I suggested to you in the first place.

Are you familiar with Bios settings?

  • Hank May 21, 2009

I came across this....maybe it will help.

You should be able to enter BIOS and set your CD ROM as your 1st boot device. Disable the hard drive and and floppy in the boot order.

The CD will act as the boot device to enable the CD ROM to install windows. . Set boot order to HD then CD after Windows installs and restarts the first time.

Also, check your cd rom to make sure it's not broken.

    sorry for all the confusion

I apologize for all the confusion.

You got a DVD writer? If you've got a DVD reader then a blank DVD is not something it can deal with. You can fix it by buying a DVD writer or DVD rewriter drive and replacing your DVD or CD drive.

1st Option: Go to BIOS level and select the CD/DVD device is the first device for boot option and then insert the recovery CD/DVD to format or install OS.
2nd Option: If recovery CD/DVD got curropted and you are having the other OS CD/DVD, then try to load and format or install the OS. Also try to download the recovery image from vendor website.

Although the BIOS in this old machine has a boot from cd option, it is quite possible the DVDrom drive simply doesn't support the feature. Many P2 machines were like that. Chances are you will need a bootable DOS/WIN95/WIN98 floopy which will allow you to get it running with a CD driver.

Once you have this accomplished you can simply use the command prompt with cd support boot option and use the command prompt to load the installer on the CD. Once it finishes it's initial setup it will be able to use the cd drive for everything BUT booting.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item.

Does the PC boot up and the displaythe desktop with icons? If not try repairing the OS with the bootable original OS CD/DVD and select he repair option or reinstall the OS without formatting on the same drive/partition. If after this you can access the BIOS, keep all settings as default or fail safe option. Also run checkdisc if you can fro m the ROM.....................sodeep
