Question about Goodman CLJ36AR42 Air Conditioner

Air conditioner not blowing cold air

We have a goodman CLJ36-1A aircondition split unit. The inside fan works, the air conditioner fan works, but the air coming out of the vents is not much cooler than the inside air temp.

Did some research and found that you should make sure the big copper line coming out of a/c is cold & wet and the small one is warm. I see the small one, but there is a larger line coming out, but it has a rubber coating.

Any ideas?
Thanks, Deb

The big copper line is not cold or wet. Does this mean it needs to be charged, or could the compressor be bad?

    Thanks,.

Plus, forgot to mention the unit is a 2003 -- could the compressor go so quickly??

    Thanks,

go ahead and, slice a bit of the big line coating with a sharp knife or, boxcutter peel back and feel the line (you can put it back in place later with duct tape) and, let me know the temperature of the large line

Just because the big one is cold and the small one is warm,Doesn't tell you if the system is properly charged or properly working. It is true that the big line will be cold and have condensation on it and the small one will be hot and dry,But this occurs in a wide pressure range,so the system could still be improperly charged. The charge in the system is based on the ambient temperature,The size of the system,The line footage,Etc............ So without a set of gauges and the ambient temperature,You can't really check anything but whether or not the unit comes on.

If the compressor is running and the line is not cold,Then it needs refrigerant. If the compressor is off the line will not be cold.So first check and make sure the compressor is in fact running.

Hi Deb,

The Suction line is the larger of the two, and the smaller is a liquid line. That said the ruber you refer to is insulation and does a very important job so do not remove it . I need to know if the outside unit is clear and free from obstruction and debris? have you noted any other worring sgns lately? ie is this system constantly running?

The suction line should be cold and quite uncomfortably so if left in contact with the skin for too long.

If the compressor is running it will probably very hot by now and suffering with a substantially high head pressure.

I feel you should isolate the supply,(switch it off) and ask an Air con service person to check the level of refrigerant in your system, if you continue to run like this the compressor will surely give up.

It will be necessary to evaluate the loss of refrigerant if this is the case and this must be rectified before adding a full charge. The climate has suffered enough so we try to do our best.

The technition should sort this out for you with strength and leak testing but try and find out as much about your system as you can when they call.

    Regards

    Steve.

My Goodman split unit has bumping/knocking noise sometimes (not everyday) when heat first kicks on in the mornings only. What could this be? Also in defrost mode should the unit blow cold air?

May be the fan in the external unit is ruined or the internal pump is comming loose. But note that the pump also make much effort until the gas flows smoothly through the pipes .

Inside fan turns on when outside unit is in defrost mode when heat is selected. This causes it to blow cold air for about 10 to 15 minutes prior to the outside fan starting.

The inside fan will run while the unit is in defrost. The electric heat strips should kick on to help prevent you from feeling this cold air. When the unit is in defrost it is essentially running in the A/C mode. You should make sure the electric heat elements are working then go from there.

Goodman split unit that heats instead of cools

Hi, Could be a run capacitor on the fan motor. They usually swell up and or leak when they go bad. If not, the only real way to test them it with a specific capacitor tester. A new capacitor would be cheaper. Make sure that the outside unit is disconnected from power before opening it up, try to spin the fan blade by hand. If it doesn't spin freely it may need oiled if possible. See above solution. Your problem is the fan motor though so if this don't do it, It will have to be replaced. If this helps, Please rate my solution. Thanks, kstfas
