My camera doesnt' work indoors. i try to take a picture and it doesnt' take when I'm in AUTO mode. However, when I'm in LANDSCAPE mode the pic will take. it seems like the flash isn't active in AUTO...

You must have a software glitch because the flash is supposed to be in the auto mode when the selector is in auto, unless you manually turn the flash off and the flash should go back to auto every time the camera is turned off and back on. Here's a work around. Turn the dial to indoor and use the flash button on the ring to set the flash to auto. In the indoor setting you can set the flash to on, off, or auto.

I have a canon digital rebel xt with a speedlite 200e flash. The flash is not working in full auto mode, although the built in flash is. I have replaced the batteries in the flash and the ready light comes...

In auto mode, the flash works only if it is necessary. You are saying that the flsah doesn't work in auto mode, and I assume that in other modes it's working properly. That means there is nothing wrong with the flash. So don't worry about the flash, it will fire in necessary, in full auto mode.

Lens will not auto focus with flash up

Not sure of you camera model, but the flash will fire momentarily when you try to focus indoors as there is not enough light for the auto focus to work. This is so the camera can determine a distance from the subject to the camera. This is called focus assist (ref to your manual). It will work outdoors as there is enough light and contrast for the focus to work.

Kit lenses included with the camera are notoriously known not to focus well in dark conditions.

How to switch on Auto Flash in Auto mode

Put the camera in "P" and press the flash button above the lens release. If the flash pops, than you probably just have too much light to need it when you are in auto. The flash button is not active in auto so if the xti doesn't want the flash in auto, u can't make it fire. If the flash button does not make the flash pop in "P", search this site for another post about flash not working and u will find that this could be the flash deactivation button in the hot shoe sticking. Not likely though with a new camera unless u have had a speedlite mounted alot.--

I found the answer and fixed my flash. Look on http://photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=00ODWf

This will describe how, if you have been using a speedlite alot, than the little tab under the shutter release side of the hot shoe can get bent down thus constantly pressing down (toward the bottom of the camera) the small button which deactivates the pop-up1.gif flash even when the speedlite is not attached. Just bend the tab up a little with a jewler's screwdriver, turn the camera off and on and voila!! Fixed!!! Dan describes pushing the tab down, but on the xti, the tab needs to be bent up to release the flash deactivation switch and fix the problem. Thanks to Dan D on photonet for saving me a service call.
