Problem The microwave after being used for a while to cook something will have sparks inside if you put something else in it and try to cook It also after shutting off sounds like something inside of it is trying to kick on. Sears came out and said they could not get it to do it but that it may be a fan internal to the unit. Does not sound like a fan more like a buzz very much like when it is heating and only lasts a second and then will repeat after 10 seconds or so and repeats for a while. Sparks appear to be coming from area of halogen lights

Popping sound coming from my panasonic NNCD997S

The following works better if done in "low light".

Put a cup of water or small bowl in the unit, close the door and turn the microwave on.

If there is anything that you can see in the cooking area, there should be sparking and it is coming from something metal, even a small piece of aluminum foil that was left behind. The thing causing the sparking needs to be removed.

If you hear the noise and it is coming from inside the area of the microwave that you cannot see then you can:

1 - Take it to a repair shop.
2 - Depending upon the cost for repair, consider buying a replacement.

If the noise is inside the machine DO NOT CONTINUE TO USE IT. Get it FIXED OR REPLACED for your own safety.

Good Luck

DANGER WARNING! Potential Hazard if your microwave was working and now doesn't...

If you have this model microwave and it was working fine, then one day it stopped heating items placed inside there are a handful of different issues that could be the problem. In my case it was intermittent, over a period of a few days it would sometimes work (heat) and sometimes not. NO MATTER if this is what your's is doing or if it stopped heating all together. If you decide to let it dry out, or not use it for a while to see if it was a one time occurrence, or whatever the reason, the first time you put something in and probably for the next 10 times at least (this assumes it starts to work again), make sure you are right there with it while it is cooking. Don't assume you can put something in, go do something and come back when the timer is beeping. There is a chance (as this happened to me) that your food inside will CATCH FIRE! Normal food item placed inside, no metal, nothing different than the numerous times before when this had been cooked but when we smelled smoke we came running. Fortunately it started and finished inside the microwave but that's not a guarantee, it could spread. Play it safe. Never had a problem like this before and never heard of a microwave cooking something until it caught on fire (especially since the time entered for the cook was 30 seconds) but it did.

Sanyo em-c 1800 sparking inside at top

That's not good at all....

check to make sure there isn't any food at the top of the microwave, also, if your microwave allows maybe try turning down the wattage when you cook such as cook on medium or Low wattage.

Also, you may need to just get a new microwave.

Microwave is arcing and making a popping noise as if something metal was in there while cooking.

I will assume that you do not have any metal items or bits of tinfoil lying around inside the oven.

If the sparks are happening on the inside of the microwave's cooking area while you are cooking, then make sure you clean the inner surfaces really well. Be sure to remove any cooked on food particles that may have splashed up during cooking.

Most likely you have some corrosion or dried food debris inside the cooking area, or perhaps even some food particles stuck to your WAVEGUIDE COVER PLATE. A dirty waveguide cover plate can certainly cause the arcing and sparking you describe.

If the thorough cleaning does not work, you may need to replace the waveguide cover. Here is a link to a short video that shows you exactly how to replace the wave guide cover yourself:

Just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the video at the website indicated.

If the sparks are coming from somewhere other that the cooking area, then your unit may need more significant electrical repairs or service.

My high power GE Advantium microwave is sparking

Your problem is a common one. When you see arcing inside your microwave, it's because of food or liquid left in the cavity or on the wave-guide cover:

  • If the wave guide has any burn spots, replace it and clean the unit well.

  • If the cavity has any burn spots, spot-sand it smooth and touch it up with microwave interior paint.
Note… If there are any burn holes in the cavity, don't use the unit-seek help from a qualified appliance repair technician.

When we first turn on the microwave there is like a mini-explosion and a fiery spark, but after that the microwave goes through its cycle and cooks the food. But we are afraid to try it again.

pls do not use any aluminum or metal material INSIDE the microwave, this can cause the problem

I assumed, but pls consider the ff info...

Be sure to use nonmetal utensils in the microwave.

For microwave cooking, cut meats and vegetables in uniform sizes to make sure that they cook evenly.

Paper plates, cups, and napkins can be used in the microwave. But don't use foil-lined paper products, paper towels that include nylon or synthetic fibers, or newspaper.
When using plastic roasting or cooking bags in the microwave, discard the wire twist tie and use a plastic fastener or a piece of string instead.

To ensure that food cooks fully and evenly in the microwave oven, stir food and turn dishes periodically while they're cooking.

Microwave ovens

The cover is probably the magenetron. That is where the microwaves come from. If the bread was moist, it might have left condensate in the unit which is causing the sparking. Unplug the unit, leave the door open over night. If you can remove that cover, do so. Be sure to carefully replace it before using the unit. Never turn on a microwave with nothing in it.
