USB IOGEAR not recognise

Needed to partiton pc HD, into 2 (C,D), then format it in NTFS to re-install Windows SPProfessional and all updates including SP2, Sp3 etc.. When pc starts it doesn't find the USB portable HD with 5yrs of backup files needed . Tried that portable HD onto another PC and that one doesn't recognise it also. Did a Norton System windoctor check and it doen't find any Dos version on the portable HD.
Help don't know what to do anymore.

    Thanks Chris for your input

I did bring it over to Geek Squad at the nearest computer store (Best Buy); the data was still in the ION USB External HDD. They were able to copy everything onto 4 DVD’S and transfer everything back onto the HD once they re format into NTFS.

Most portable HDDs show up without drivers being required, so, assuming other drives or USB devices show up the general assumption is that either the circuit board in the enclosure has failed or the HDD has failed.

Assuming it doesn't work on other PCs and that other USB devices do, take the external drive to your local computer shop and ask to have the drive tested and moved into a new enclosure. If the drive is OK then the people at the computer store can simply transfer the drive into a new enclosure and it will work. If it fails testing you will likely need to send the drive to a Pro, I would recommend Armor-IT Data Recovery(listed in the FixYa directory).

You can swap the enclosures yourself if you have basic hand tools and are feeling handy but it might be nice to have the techs at the local shop test the drive.

If you need any further instructions add a comment on this post and included the make and model# of the failed external drive and I will offer further assistance.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Chris

Needed is an operation manual "how to" for HGST Touro 4TB external hard drive machine just bought. Want to know how to transfer files from computer to external storage?

FIRST the short ANSWER; Open Windows Explorer and drag and drop files/folders to new drive.

LONG ANSWER; Connect drive, during boot up of PC, and ENTER (CMOS) SETUP. See if drive is listed.

IF LISTED resume boot and see if Windows FINDS new Hardware and installs it. If so go to short answer.
If not seen by windows but seen by CMOS the drive must be PARTITIONED and then FORMATTED. OR

IF disk came with install CD run install to assure all needed USB drivers are present for windows to install disk through USB port.

Once USB drivers are installed reboot PC and see if Windows finds new hardware.

IF windows still does not install new HD but CMOS shows drive is present, the drive needs to be partitioned.

To partition new drive type DISKPART at dos prompt or in START RUN OPEN and press enter.

At the DISKPART> ( prompt ) type LIST DISK then press enter.

Example: DISKPART> LIST DISK press enter

FIND the number assigned to the new drive in the list (#), then type SELECT DISK #

Example: DISKPART> SELECT DISK 2 press enter

the info returned in the dos window should be;

Example: Disk 2 is now the selected disk

Type CREATE PARTITION EXTENDED

Example: DISKPART> CREATE PARTITION EXTENDED press enter

Now shutdown the PC then reboot. Windows should now Find hardware and install new disk.

Click START then COMPUTER the new disk should be listed.

Right click on the Drive and select FORMAT use NTFS format.

now you should be able to drag and drop files/folders to your new disk.

I have a 1tb Buffalo HD-PCU2 ministation. I want it formatted as Fat 32 to use on my Humax recorder but Windows vista or 7 don't recognise it? Is it fixable?

FYI: fay32 doesn't support files larger than 2GB so if your putting movies than do NTFS.

To format as FAT32 you have to open an command prompt as admin. Window Button > All Programs > Accessories > Right CLICK command prompt and run as admin.

<VOL> = your drive letter ex E:
Command to format as FAT32

format <VOL> /FS:FAT32 /X

Tring to back up pc to elements 1 tb external hd

Fat32 simply means that your hard drive can only read files up to 4GB, format your external harddrive using file system NTFS then try to back up all your files again. Hope it helps you...

The best you can do is buy a small cable (+/-€ 10) IDE-USB. This cable lets you connect your IDE drive on a pc using USB.

Partitioning ext. "MY BOOK"

You don't need to format it. You can also just convert it to NTFS and keep the current data.
There is also no requirement to create more than one partition.

In the command prompt window, type
convert drive_letter: /fs:ntfs

You'll find this in Windows Help. Just search for convert ntfs.

The porblem seems to have soted itself out after I've removed the USB drivers and then let windows re-install them automatically.
You remove the USB drivers in the Device Manager which is in the Systems icon, under the Control Panel

Drivers required

SCSI Drivers are only an optional part.
This is not a problem with your driver floppies.

The problem is with the linux being preinstalled on the HD.

Linux uses many types of file-systems. Even if it was NTFS or FAT, it is most probable that windows xp cd won't be able to recognize it; because, it may use unsupported method of formatting.

What you have to do is;
1. Format the two HDs by either
  • Moving it to another windows or linux computer and fully formatting the Hard Disks using fat32 or NTFS (supported by windows). If it is a windows PC using for formatting, no problems. If it is a linux system, delete all partitions, and format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
  • By a linux installation CD and here too, format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
2. Install the windows xp in it, using the same booting from CD Porcess. Here, you may or may not choose to install the SCSI drivers ( the floppy you got by pressing F2 when it says to do so in the installation immediately). It is good not to install the SCSI drivers if it is not a necessity for you.

Now, you can create any number of partition, format, etc during win XP installation.

IBM Netvista 6059 - Can't upgrade to windows XP

Right well XP Pro really MUST be formatted with NTFS only... I suggest you get a third party partitioning program like Partition magic and completely remove the partition & redo it all again & this time Format NTFS. Or if ya have a WIN98 boot disk, and ya can use FDISK, Delete ALL partitions, and remake them again, using all the disk space, then format as NTFS, then proceed as below Then using your windows XP PRO setup Disk, start the install ...then when asked about where you want the install located, select C & REFORMAT it AGAIN with the windows setup using again NTFS file system... this should finish & then the Install should "see" your entire hard drive and format it accordingly and then when finished you can proceede to install XP.
