I am having an issue with NOT being able to turn off Close Captioning on some DVDs that I rent or have even bought. This just started happening after renting a movie from Redbox the other day. I don't see anywhere in the SETTINGS section of the player where this can be turned off/on, so is this something I need to change on my TV?

Can't turn on closed captioning and subtitles

If it's only with some DVDs, then the problem likely lies in the DVD itself not containing any subtitles or CC.

I need to activate CC for my Dad, Please help I have to go to work. I have a flat screen SOYO

Determine if closed captioning is available on the program that you've selected. In your program guide, the letters "CC" should appear at the end of the description.
Locate the closed captioning option on your remote. Some remotes have a "CC" button that you simply need to push to activate closed captioning
Locate the closed captioning option in your television's menu if there is no "CC" button on your remote. To do this, push the "menu" button on the remote control. The closed captioning option will probably be in the same section as the language function.
Set the closed captioning option to "on." Within several seconds, you should see the text appear on your screen.
To use closed captioning for DVDs, look for the "CC" label on the lower back section of the DVD case where it lists audio information. Turn on your TV's closed captioning and you should see the captioning like you do on a television program. Alternately, some DVDs include English subtitles that you can turn on in the setup/language menu of the DVD.
Thank you.

Close captioning is always on when playing DVDs.

I believe you have to turn the caption off on the DVD. Some dvd's automatically start with caption title. Check the manual for the DVD again.

Closed caption problem

I had the same issue... here's what I did.  If power off your cable box, then press the menu button, there's a selection to enable or disable Closed Captioning.  This works for both HD series Motorola boxes Comcast offers, at least in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area.  Hope this helps!
