clarify , is this fitted with electronic ignition or points i.e. standard coil ignition , if standard ignition , remove # 1 spark plug and roll over engine until piston is at top of stroke, replace plug, remove distibutor cap and check gap, clearance on points, should be quite small but open not closed, verify you have spark,DO NOT HOLD SPARK PLUG WIRE,to plug,if you do not have spark you can test coil using a temporary jumper wir to coil from battery directly to coil but remember you cannot stop the engine with key switch during this test, you have to remove the wire to shutdown

Put a timing light on the number one wire and start the engine. The timing should be set for 6° before top dead center. Turn the distributor to accomplish this.

I've often heard that some Pontiac engines (vintage 1980-2002) used a plastic or quiet type timing chain and sprockets. Owners of these vehicles I have talked to said that this kept them from buying...

Hi,
No one has ever used plastic gears and chains. Some of the older big block models used timing gears with nylon teeth. This is true for all manufacturers and I believe ford still uses them in some engines. The disavantage to the nylon teeth was they would wear out somewhat faster, usually in the 80K-100K range. The pontiac V6 3800 engine has had steel toothed gears from 1986 to present and considered the most reliable V6 model ever built. While it is rare to actually break a timing chain under normal driving conditions, it does happen in race applications. However, when teeth and chains wear out, rough running and high fuel consumption due to poor mechanical time is the result. 350 GM engines were recommended to replace timing sets at 80K miles for optimum performance and were notorious for chewing off teeth. The aftermarket high performance replacement sets were made of cast iron or tempered steel. Double roller chain types, while noisier, lasted longer with fewer timing relasted issues. I had a 1979 firebird for 17 years with 200K+ miles on it and it still ran like a champ, so like anything else, proper maintenance and good driving habits have a huge affect on engine component life....Mike

How do I adjust my timing for a 79 Pontiac Bonneville Brougham, and if my lifters are worn is this a job that I could do myself or something I may want the shop to handle

To set the timing, unplug the vacuum line to distributer and plug. Loosen the hold down bolt and with the light set timing at 12 degrees if it is a pontiac engine,if chevy engine set at 8 degree's,if buich engine 15 degree's,if olds engine set at 20 degree's.They used all these engines in pontiac product'a in 1979.To change lifter's it's a pretty big job,I talked to ya earlier about your veh., and usually if you replace lifter's due to wear the came should really be replaced due to wear and that's a pretty big job for most. If you really want to keep your veh. for a while that is the proper repair procedure. Most shop's probably won't do one without the other to warranty their work.

Thermostat

On the 6-cyl 3.4L, it's under the throttle body. Just follow the large hose from the top left side (driver's side) back to the engine.
