Usually the "paper empty" sensor flag gets stuck and does not return or "fall" to the empty position when the paper ends.
The flag is right next to the pad assembly.
Use a compressed air can to remove any dust-debris from the flag housing.
Because this flag uses gravity to return to empty position it might be usefull to use a spring to force it. Let me know if you need further assistance.

I have a Laserjet p4014dn printer. it warms normally but once it picks up paper, it jams. i have dried clearing jam several times but on starting to print it jams

Three areas you need to check.1.Pick up area: While pick up roller picking up the paper, delay pick or no pick causes paper jam..
2.Registration assembly area: Once paper picked from the tray, paper leading edge registered by the paper sensor located under the registration assembly.. In case this sensor dusty malfunction or flag damage, paper wont sense. result paper damage..
3.Fusing area. If the paper travels up to fuser area, check paper jammed before entering in fuser(Teflon not rotating properly, replace teflon sleeve) or just crossed?(check paper sensors in fuser unit, clean the sensors & check flags, flag springs.

Printer says tray 1 low, but paper is not low

Most likely has something to do with the sensor the pick arm's flag. Try to check if the flag is moving freely. If it is, the sensor may need replacement.

The printer will not pick up the paper

With injet/lower cost printers, a mechanical flag or lever is actuated by the paper. It can be an optical sensor as well, more likely in a laser.

The optical sensor can be gummed up with dust, or paper fragments. A mechanical flag or lever can be dislodged or bent by overloading or pulling jammed paper out, backwards to the paper path.

Your best tool is a bright light and a carefull visual inspection to see if anything is dislodged or dusty in the paper tray or in the receiver for the tray.

Dustoff will clean the dust, care should be used in readjusting the flag or lever.

Will not pick up the flag over 150 yards.

You need an alignment. The transmitter and receiver are not pointing at the same spot. The farther the distance the bigger the gap between the two. Dropping the rangefinder and vibration are killers to Pinseekers. Bushnell will fix ya.....

Paper jam

Hi there,

Here is the most important thing to understand about paper jams in any printer....

The printer does not know if there is a paper jam anywhere in the printer.

What it does do, is respond to sensors ( optical sensors, either open or closed, by plastic flags). These flags are moved as paper moves through the paper path.

One example of a paper jam message when there is really no paper jam, is when the feed rollers are worn and do not pick up paper from the paper tray.

When you start printing, the printer expects that first sensor to open ( paper passes the sensor ) at a very specific point in time. If the paper did not get picked up from the tray, then the printer will ASSUME that the paper must be jammed somewhere because it did not reach it on time.

Now this will also happen if in fact the paper did get picked up and then jams prior to the sensor.

So... if you get the picture of how this works, understand then too, that if the printer is showing a paper jam message at power on, then one of the flags is open when it should be closed.

If you do not actually have a piece of paper holding this flag in the open position, then the flag is possible broken.

I usually see this kind of damage occur after a true paper jam, where the paper is removed either in the wrong direction ( pulled out back the way it was going instead of the way it should normally travel ), and this breaks the flag, or it was pulled out forcefully again, catching on and damaging the flag.

All of the above pertains to ANY printer, and not just yours. you must take care to fully inspect every inch of the paper path, from the paper tray, to the exit, use a flashlight, and look for the sensors and make sure they are not blocked or broken.

Good luck,

Cory
