My treadmill stops randomlly when in use and i have to step off of the belt for it to continue spinning.

Check both belts to be sure they are adjusted and not slipping.Check the underside of the walk belt to see if it feels frayed in the center as compared to the edges, the center always wears more than the edges a really worn belt must be replaced. if it is nor worn there is a wax lubricant for proform treadmills that can be purchased at retail stores that sell treadmills.Sears, dicks sporting goods and also treadmilldoctor.com are good places to buy it.

BELT LOSES POWER
(Bogs Down or is Sluggish) This condition is when the treadmill operates normally without a person on the belt and then slows down when someone steps on the belt or when the treadmill operates normally for a given period of time with someone on the belt then abruptly begins to slow down.
There are four typical causes for this problem (listed in order of our experience:
1) The walking belt and/or deck are worn. (85% of the time)
2) The walking belt and/or motor belt are too tight- if you have adjusted either recently. (8% of the time)
3) The motor has lost torque and needs brushes or has demagnetized. (5% of the time)
4) The controller is dropping output. (2% of the time)
Walking Belt is Worn:
The only certain way to test for a worn walking belt is to take a DC amp draw (if you have a DC treadmill) or an AC draw (for AC). Trying to look at the belt or a feel test is highly unreliable. Better tests, if you lack a DC ammeter (they are expensive for a good one), are a coast test or an incline test. To test the deck, go back to the Troubleshooting section and download the belt and deck inspections instructions. The coast test is to get on the treadmill as the lowest incline setting and walk on the treadmill at 3 MPH. Pull the safety key and it should take you 2-3 full steps to stop (this is a general rule…some like a few Tunturi models stop on a dime even with a healthy belt but most this tests works well upon). Fewer steps indicate high friction.
The incline test is to put the treadmill at max incline and walk on it at 3 MPH. If the treadmill operates normally at max incline but bogs down at minimum incline, replace the walking belt. Gravity takes over for the drive system eliminating the friction problem. On some heavily worn walking belts, this test will not eliminate the problem.
Walking Belt/Motor Belt too Tight:
If you have adjusted the walking belt or motor belt recently, check for this problem. When the belts start slipping, some people just crank down the belts and on treadmills, tighter is not necessarily better. The
tighter the belts, the more the drive system has to work to keep everything moving. You should be able to lift the walking belt (with the treadmill unplugged) in the center of the treadmill about 3” without straining. Tighter belts should be loosen but make sure you don’t create a dangerous slipping situation by loosening.
The motor belt (with the treadmill unplugged) should be able to be turned by hand to almost a 90 degree angle from its normal operating position. Loosen the belt if too tight. Make sure to test for slipping and if it does with the proper tension, replace the motor belt.
Needs Brushes / Demagnetized Motor:
Typically when we find a motor that has lost torque; it needs a new set of motor brushes. Typically we can make brushes for almost any motor if we don’t already stock them. Motor demagnetization is not that common but it does happen and it is normally easy to diagnose. If you have confirmed the belt and/or deck is not worn and the belts aren’t too tight, you can test for a motor torque problem. DO NOT USE YOUR HAND OR ANY OTHER BODY PART TO IMPEDE THE MOTOR…YOU WILL LIKELY LOSE YOUR BODY PART IN THE PROCESS IF THE MOTOR IS GOOD. The step to test for the motor is to use a foreign object preferably on a long shaft. First determine the direction of the motor spin (most have directional movement printed on the motor tag), then apply pressure with an object with downward pressure on the flywheel in the direction the flywheel is turning (do not attempt to put force against the rotating direction of the flywheel as you can easily injure yourself). If you can slow the motor, typically you need brush replacement.
To test for demagnetization, the motor must be disassembled. Once you have the motor retaining bolts removed, remove the motor core by sliding it out of the end of the housing. If the magnets pull the core against the housing and it is difficult to remove, the magnets are good. If the magnets do not attract the core, the motor has to be replaced.
Controller:
This is the most uncommon of the causes. Typically replacing a controller in this situation will not solve the underlying problem and then you will end up replacing a belt as well as a control. Normally if a control is dropping output, it will do it with a person on the belt or not. Tests of DC output dropping is normal in many controls since they have a current limiter which will automatically drop output to prevent burning up the board. This is best diagnosed by eliminating the other possible problems first. If you are left with the control as the cause, replace the control.

Either front roller may need to be replaced or the motor drive belt may need to be adjusted. This problems are caused when a walking belt is worn out and in need of replacement. Too much tension can cause bearing failure in the motor and the front roller and front roller pulley failure.

Motor drive belt adjustment: The motor drive belt is adjusted independently from the walking belt. Some newer models have an auto tensioner which is a lever that has a wheel that puts pressure on the drive belt and a spring on the other end that automatically loads the belt to the proper tension. You should not adjust these since they are preset. Tension can be affected slightly by adjusting the tension of the walking belt but if you have a slipping problem, the drive belt will require replacement. If your drive belt is too loose, it will slip on the front roller pulley or the motor pulley. If it is too tight, it will increase your amp draw to the point that you may have an electronics or motor problem. Due to this, it is better to be on the safe side and replace a drive belt rather than risk over tightening it.

SOURCE: Running belt is sliping when on treadmill

If the front roller is stopping with the walking belt, it is the drive belt. You may be able to tighten it, if it's not too old. The easiest way is to remove the belt by turning the motor by hand while pushing the belt away from the motor. Then adjust the motor back a 16th to an 8th of an inch or so, put the roller side of the belt on the roller side of the pulley, so that you have enough slack to put the belt on the motor. Now, while you pull the belt onto the front roller pulley, turn the motor and walk the belt back on. If it won't go on, this way, you probably have the motor too far back, making it too tight. do the wheels lock up too that push the belt? if the wheels still spin than the belt might be too loose if that is the case look for an adjustment spot for the belt.

Please follow the next step:


1) Find the set bolt(s) on the motor. This is typically run through only one side of the motor mount or may be

on both sides but it does not run the full length of the mounting. Loosen this bolt(s) but do not remove. Jack

bolt models will have flat mounts and may contain up to four bolts.

2) Look for a bolt that will tension the motor. If it has this bolt, it typically runs in the same direction parallel

with the drive and walking belts. If your treadmill is not equipped with this bolt, . If your

treadmill is equipped with this bolt (very few are) the repair will only require one person. Using 2 7/16"

wrenches, make a few turns to this bolt, tighten the bolts from Steps 1 and 2 and test your treadmill for

slipping. If belt continues to slip, repeat Steps If a second attempt does not repair the problem

3) If you have arrived at this step, let's make sure you have a drive belt tension problem. With the motor cover

removed, walk on the belt normally and try to stall the belt to make it slip. Be careful during this test. If the

problem is in the drive belt, either the drive belt will stop when stalled or the front roller will stop when

stalled. If the motor, drive belt, and front roller continue to turn when the walking belt is stalled, the problem

is with the walking belt slipping on the front roller. If the drive belt continues to turn but the front roller stalls,

you may have a broken front roller pulley. If this is the problem, you will notice it because the plastic will

usually make a loud squealing sound on the metal front roller. The entire front roller assembly repaired or

replaced (see the help topic on replacing a pulley) and the drive belt must be replaced. We suggest

replacing the drive belt as well because it is a low cost item and will most likely, have suffered unusual

wear from the problem. Another possibility is that the drive belt has worn down. In some cases, belt

dressing may help correct the problem. If not, the drive belt must be replaced.

The treadmill runs fine until i step on it then it stalls and stops running


There is a motor which spins the treadmill belt.When you start the treadmill, the motor starts running and belt spins smoothly.But when you step on the treadmill, the motor cannot take the load and it stops working.In your case, the motor and motor control board is got weak and this is causing the problem. ---------- Or the other possibility is the treadmill belt, the belt on which you step.That belt should be smooth, there is grease in the inner side of belt to keep it lube and run fluently.If that oily grease gets dried up then belt gets bit stiff or jammed up, when a load is on belt.So get this both possibilities checked.First try lubing the belt internally and then try check the motor and motor control board.To locate motor control board its simple.On the side of motor you will see a electric plug in connector, the other end of that connector gets connected to motor control board.Remove that connector , clean it and reconnect after 5 minutes, then check.In some cases this resets the internal control system and everything, works normally.But its not always possible then removing and reconnecting connector helps.In other cases the motor or control board needs to be replaced.If the motor gets weak, then internal coils in motor gets burned up.----------- This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Treadmill seems to slip in all speeds when weight is put on it. Changed mother board and checked belt tension all were good. Should this machine be lubed?


Pull the hood off. Stand on the sides of the walk platform and start the belt at 4mph. Take one foot and step on the walk belt hard. Look at the pulley on the front roller. Does the pulley continue to turn while the roller stops? If so, the pulley is slipping in the roller (which is a press fit). Replace the front roller or remove the motor belt from the pulley.Align the pulley with the pulley on the motor by tapping with a mallet. Drill an 1/8 hole throught the pulley and roller. Countersink the pulley hole so a small head screw will be under the pulley groves. Install screw in this hole. This is called pinning and is a pemanent fix. If both the pulley and the roller stop together when the belt is stepped on the motor belt is loose. If only the walkbelt stops when stepped on, the walkbelt is loose.

Belt jerks with each step. At first it hesitated with random steps but has become more pronounced. I walk at 3.5-4MPH but belt does it at any speed. It is not plugged into a surge protector.


I have the same problem with this type of treadmill but only when running on it. I usually increase the incline to prevent it. I believe the tension on the belt has become loose. I have been looking for a guide on how to tighten it but havent come across one yet. If i find one ill post back with the link.

Before beginning this repair: Check to make certain that the drive belt requires adjustment. Check out belt slipping instructions or with the motor cover removed, walk on the belt normally and try to stall the belt to make it slip. Be careful during this test. If the problem is in the drive belt, either the drive belt will stop when stalled or the front roller will stop when stalled. If the motor, drive belt, and front roller continue to turn when the walking belt is stalled, the problem is with the walking belt slipping on the front roller. If the drive belt continues to turn but the front roller stalls, you may have a broken front roller pulley.
Step 1- Find the motor mounts. Many motors in Icon treadmills have a main pivot joint in which a bolt runs the full length of the motor mount. This bolt will require loosening to provide maximum adjustability. Some models have a single jack bolt and others have an auto tensioner. Single jack bolts are the easiest to adjust. Step 2- Find the set bolt(s) on the motor. This is typically run through only one side of the motor mount or may be on both sides but it does not run the full length of the mounting. Loosen this bolt(s) but do not remove. Jack bolt models will have flat mounts and may contain up to four bolts. Step 3- Look for a bolt that will tension the motor. If it has this bolt, it typically runs in the same direction parallel with the drive and walking belts. If your treadmill is not equipped with this bolt, skip to Step 4. If your treadmill is equipped with this bolt (very few are) the repair will only require one person. Using 2 7/16" wrenches, make a few turns to this bolt, tighten the bolts from Steps 1 and 2 and test your treadmill for slipping. If belt continues to slip, repeat Steps 1, 2, & 3. While one person applied increased tension to the drive belt, the other person should tighten the motor set bolt(s) that are described in Step 2. Tighten the bolt from Step 1 and test. If the problem is not corrected, repeat Steps 1, 2, & 4 and retest. If problem persists, skip to Step 5. Step 5- If you have arrived at this step, let's make sure you have a drive belt tension problem. With the motor cover removed, walk on the belt normally and try to stall the belt to make it slip. Be careful during this test. If the problem is in the drive belt, either the drive belt will stop when stalled or the front roller will stop when stalled. If the motor, drive belt, and front roller continue to turn when the walking belt is stalled, the problem is with the walking belt slipping on the front roller. the problem. If the walking belt slips when walked on. Using the allen wrench, turn both rear roller bolts clockwise, 1/4 of a turn. When the walking belt is correctly tightened, you should be able to lift each side of the walking belt 3 to 4 inches off the walking platform. Be careful to keep the walking belt centered. Plug in the power cord, insert the key and carefully walk on the treadmill for a few minutes. Repeat until the walking belt is properly tightened.

When i walk on it the belt sticks in places and i cant let go of the rails


If your belt is sticking there are 2 possible causes. Either the walking belt itself is loose or the drive belt. The way to check is look at the front roller when you step on the walking belt. If the walking belt stops, but the front roller continues to spin, the walking belt is loose and needs tightened. If the front roller stops when you step on the walking belt, then the drive belt needs tightened or replaced. The walking belt can be tightened fairly easily, there are bolts at the rear of the machine that adjust the rear roller. The drive belt is a little more involved and requires removing the motor hood. Check to see what the front roller is doing and I'll help you further.

My proform 860 has belt slippage and sometimes stops after a few minutes


I had the same problem and was about to change the walking belt. Instead I removed the 5 screws holding on the hood and adjusted the Reed Switch and took a walk. Whenever I stomped on the belt hard it would stop. I Could now see (because I removed the hood) that the motor continued to spin and the Motor Drive Belt was slipping and was the culprit. Something that I had noticed before was all this fine rubber dust coming out near the left front corner where this belt is. If you see that it's a good indicator the motor belt is slipping and needs to be replaced.
