Some old teaching materials done in Microsoft Publisher (not sure wich version it was done in) can't be read by my current version, 2003.

The problem is the same, but my first solution response was a joke. Literally.

...why are you still using publisher 98? Never mind. Whoever told you that 93 would open a file created with 98 was lying; the programming likely isn't compatible. At this point, you'd need to look REALLY hard for someone with the expertise AND tools to get that data for you. I definately have the expertise, but publisher 93 is almost as old as I am, so i doubt i have any of the necessary software lying around. If you use a more modern version of publisher, like publisher 2003, you might get lucky. i don't remember if 2003 is backwards compatible, but it probably is. But if anyone tells you that any computer or program from that era is forwards compatible, they are LYING. So to answer your question, try buying office 2003, and open it with publisher 2003. It might work then.

How do I upgrade my family tree maker 6

The current version of Family Tree Maker is version 2010. It installs as a brand new version and ignores the old version. The old version can be uninstalled at any time.
Your version will not be automatically read by the new version. There are instructions to import your current files into the new program at this link.
There is a set of Frequently Asked Questions at this link that address the requirements to run the new version. You should read through them to make sure your system can run this program update.

This makes no sense.

If you updated Publisher, it should read files created with the "current" version of Publisher *AND* it should read files created with the "previous" version of Publisher.

Unable to open a Publisher file a second time without rebooting PC

have you upgraded from xp to vista since you installed the microsoft publisher?
it sounds like your publisher is not closing the prior instance running. you can bring up the task manager and watch what is happening when you open and close instances in publisher. in task manager click on processes and watch what comes and goes as you work with publisher.
then if it continues, i would reinstall you publisher all together. the consensus among the gurus is it will running but it 11 yrs old and may have issues that can;t be patched for vista.

Can locate publisher

According to the product specs., Office Pro 2007 did not come with Publisher: Read:
In addition to the core Office XP programs - Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint - Office XP Professional includes Microsoft Access 2002, the Office XP database solution that helps users store, access, and analyze their data.
You have to purchase Publisher.
But good news, You can download OpenOffice from www.openoffice.org. It is free and comes with a Publisher compatible program. OpenOffice.org boasts two mid-level layout programs -- Draw and Writer -- each of which is far more versatile than its name suggests. You may have to go through the tutorial but it Free. and works well in windows.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe

Microsoft Publisher

if the file you need to view was created in office 2007, and you are trying to view it in an older version, your only option is to install the office 2007 trial (publisher viewer does not exist for publisher 2007, per microsoft http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/publisher/HA102339061033.aspx)

60 day trial download (this should do the trick) -> http://office.microsoft.com/search/redir.aspx?AssetID=XT102344301033&CTT=5&Origin=HA102339061033
