Probably the OS 10.5 version your're installing is not compatible or supported by the system motherboard of your computer model Apple Power Mac G5. per my research from Apple website herewith is their solution quote on what applicable OS to install for such model: "Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) and iMac G5 (iSight) models require Mac OS X 10.4.2 or later, you can t install Final Cut Pro 3.x or earlier versions on these computers. Final Cut Pro 3.x and earlier versions are not supported on any computer running Mac OS X 10.4". best regards

Probably the optical drive of your iMac G5 does not support DualLayer DVDs (DL is standard format, on which Mac OS 10.5 is originally delivered). Use an external DVD-drive for installation if (Apple>About this computer...> More info...>optical drive (disk burning)) does not tell you your mac is equipped with a DL-compatible drive.

My G5 freezes constantly. What can I do.

Try running Apple Hardware Test on the machine (it's one of the discs that came with the machine.) Also, if it's freezing by showing the spinning rainbow cursor (beachballing) you may have a failing hard drive. That wouldn't be uncommon for how old the machine is.

System will boot to the white screen with apple logo then freeze on the blue screen. boots into login on safe mode, entered password for the only profile than gets stuck with spinning pinwheel.

Hi,

I am Sorry to Hear this Problem. This is a Common issue on G5 Mac Desktops. You could Google ' G5 Freezes ' and you would see many People facing the same Problem.

This is more often a Bad Faulty Logic Board. There we Certain Recalls for the same. You need to Contact Apple to check whether your Machine would be Covered under Warranty or not.

If you have the Installation Disc, You could try to Reinstall OS first. If you can't boot a CD, it would more likely Confirm Faulty Logic Board.

Let me know,if needed further assistance.

Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

When you boot up g5 hold down the command button (apple logo) and the letter s at the same time to but the g5 in single user mode. When it boot in single user mode type fsck -f so it can check disk on the hard drive and repair Mac OS X. After it done doing check disk type exit and see if it will boot up regularly.

Apple mac G5 freezes when booting up.

Try unplugging all Firewire/USB devices. Also, unplug the power cord from the computer. This resets the logic board. If that doesn't isolate the problem, put your Original system CD that came with the computer and hold down the C key. Boot up and run Disk Utility. Run the repair disk and then repair disk permissions. Reboot and try booting your system again.

Sounds like a GPU problem to me.

You can go diy approach which involves taking the laptop totally apart and then heating up the GPU with a heat gun.

If you google you'll find guides for this.

Best of luck!

G5 Graphics Card Freezes or begins to show lines on display

Since you are able to see your mouse pointer move, the display is refreshing so the problem is with something other than the graphics card. Generally software / OS related.

So assuming you aren't experiencing a hardware failure try the following...

Boot from the CD the computer shipped with.

Insert CD and restart the computer holding the "c" key
Your computer should boot from the CD

If so run disk utility from the CD and repair the disk as well as permissions. If there are any errors repair again.

If this is successful your computer "should" be repaired. If it is still freezing, use your CD to perform a Archive and install which should keep all your personal settings and installed software intact.

Cheers

G5 Mac Desktop freezes at random

First you need to run some maintenance (which in itself may solve it) to rule out software issues, so start here...
Resolve startup issues and perform disk maintenance with Disk Utility and fsck

Mac OS X: How to start up in single-user or verbose mode

If that doesn't help, try booting into Safe Mode and see what happens, if it comes up hopefully another restart may solve, if not, you can at least use this as a starting point to try and resolve. Safe Mode will allow you to get around, surf, etc...

What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode

If Safe Mode comes up alright, I would install AppleJack, excellent troubleshooting article can be found here... Troubleshooting Tools: AppleJack

Another excellent free tool for performing maintenance is Onyx (be sure to download the right version for your system). Install the package, then run it, it will check your drive and the structure, after this, click on the automation tab and check on everything for Maintenance, Clear Cache, Cleaning, and check on Reset -> LaunchServices database and Mail's Envelope Index. When it completes, restart. Repeat any time something seems flaky, if not try to run at least once a month.
