ODOR IN WASHER

How do I get rid of the foul odor in my washer. I have used the Tide front load cleaner as recommended, but the stink persists. Do you think vinegar or baking soda would work? What do you recommend.

Are you wiping the glass and the water seal (you have to peel it back to get at the pooled water) each and every load? We used to have a top-load and never had to do this before, but if you dry it every time it won't mildew.

If you weren't you will have to wash the rubber gasket with vinegar or some other solvent... Check your owner's guide.

Sounds like you need to check that there is a water trap ( u bend) between the machine and the main waste pipe. If your waste pipe from your machine goes straight into your main waste pipe then you will get the smell of the drains through your machine.

Mildew odor in the machine....can't get rid of it and makes clothes STINK!

If you have a smelly front loading clothes washing machine, toss in a Finish Geltabs (the ones that are all liquid) and run the machine on a hot wash cycle, medium to heavy load (to get more water in the tub) with no clothes in the machine. You don't need to use much of a spin cycle so set it on low. The washing machine will come clean and even the moldy spots on the rubber gaskets will disappear. A second treatment may be needed if the smell is not completely gone. We tried everything from vineger to bleach to baking soda to borax to commercially available odor removers from Whirlpool and Tide. Nothing worked until I hit on this idea. It's cheap, easy and can be done anytime your machine needs a refreshing. I used the orange Geltabs but any fragrance would be fine. Keep the door on your washer open a bit when possible to air out to help preclude those nasty smells.

Musty smell

The "MAX" line indicates how much liquid must be in the blue dispenser cup before it DISPENSES from the bottom of the cup.
This is a very, very frustrating mistake that gives owners much grief.
After three months of incorrect type of detergent or incorrect amount of the correct detergent used--musty odor begins to occur.

After more than two years--a significant amount of soap ****/curd has accumulated in the washer. Odor-causing bacteria flourishes on this build-up.
It is imperative to remove this slimy residue. Tide sells a product called
"TIDE WASHING MACHINE CLEANER" which is very effective.

My Samsung vrt washer has a foul smell whenever I wash a load...I can wash it in hot water warm water and cold water....This is not solved there is still a foul smell.. I used Borax, sanitizer (tide),...

You may have a biofilm buildup in the tub that is too thick to be removed by splashing it with your cleaner. The owner's manual says "Clean the interior of your Washer periodically to remove any dirt, soil, odor, mold, mildew, or bacterial residue that may remain in your Washer as a result of washing clothes. Failure to follow these instructions may result in unsatisfactory conditions, including unpleasant odor and/or permanent stains on your Washer or laundry. Hard water deposits may be removed, if needed. Use a cleaner labeled "Washer safe". "

I take that to mean you'll need a bucket of soapy water, rubber gloves and a sponge or rag to manually scrub the tub and door. Don't neglect the gasket, especially around the edges. Run a rinse cycle to finish the job. If you still have odor, run a rinse with the sanitizer and the SilverCare option; perhaps the silver will take out the remaining bacteria on the outer tub. As a last resort, you may have to disassemble the machine to hand-scrub otherwise inaccessible parts in contact with wash water.

If you use well water or city water with little or no chlorination, you may have bacteria in the water lines to the washer. This may make the water itself stink. To check for this, shut off the external water supply valve to the washer, disconnect the hoses and place them in a large (5-gallon) bucket. Turn on the water supply briefly and sniff. If the water is bad, you'll need to run it at full rate into the bucket to flush the lines, then consider installing an anti-microbial filter in you household plumbing. Also, check the inlet strainers where the hose connects to the machine. If they are clogged or loaded with slime, this will slow the flow rate and make it easier for bacteria to hang on inside the hoses.

Another possibility is a bad reaction between a chemical contaminant in the water and your laundry detergent. You can test for this by stirring a bit of the detergent into the bucket of sample water.

I have the Whirlpool Topload Cabrio washing machine and it will be a year old on Jan. 15, 2011. It is really starting to stink up my laundry room. I have run the wash cycle through with distilled vinegar...

Here is what I do. I run "Tide Washing Machine Cleaner" thru the washer first with HOT water. Then, I recommend running a rinse only with hot water & bleach to rinse the washer out really well and don't forget to leave the lid opened when the washer is not in use.

There is a smell like rotten eggs in the washer.

If you have used a non HE detergent in your washer this smell will occur often. Even using HE detergents over a period of 1 year since new they can get this odor. There are products on the market like Affresh: http://www.affresh.com/#/home or Tide washing machine cleaner: http://www.tide.com/en-US/product/tide-washing-machine-cleaner.jspx?ms=true (select info)

What you can do is use a full cup of bleach and 1/4 cup powdered Dawn dish washing soap in your washer with some non greasy rags. Dump it straight into the tub (not via the dispenser) and run a HOT wash. You can also add a squeeze of lemon at the same time or lemon concentrate. If it has been a long time since a machine cleaning cycle you may have to do this 2 times. It is recommended you perform a machine cleaning cycle at least every 90 days.

Any feedback via a response here of your success or failure to get rid of the bad smell would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for using FixYa.

How to get rid moldy smell in LG Front loader washmachine?

There are several cleaners for front loading washers on the market, such as affresh, washer magic, smellywasher cleaner, whirlaway hot tub cleaner, and tide washer cleaner. Clean out the filter located behind the access door at the lower left front of the machine, then, if your model has a tub clean setting, use that with one of those cleaners, if not, use one of those cleaners with the longest, hottest cycle. If things were very bad, you may have to clean it twice. Now, after it is cleaned out,.....STOP USING SO MUCH SOAP ! Use only one tablespoon of HE laudry detergent per cycle, and only one teaspoon of fabric softener if you use that. (Note: Bath towels, used only to wipe off clean bodies, then tossed into the laundry are not dirty enough to require soap usage, and should never have softener used on them) The odors in your washer are caused by a build up of soap and fabric softeners on the inside of the washer's drum. Also, you may have a build up of soap or fabric softener on your clothes. Wash them again once with no soap or fab softener to rinse them out.

Stale odor within tub

Front loaders are known for building up mold and the smell.
It’s caused by using liquid detergent which is made from animal fat. Use powder. And use the minimum amount.
It’s caused by using fabric softener. Dilute it 50/50 with water.
It’s caused by the water remaining in the tub between washes. Leave the door open to allow it to dry. .
Pull the rubber door seal back and clean the mold off .
Affresh is recommended by some manufacturers. You run it through a wash cycle with it.

Water in drum

The swish water sound that you hear in the drum is normal. There is some liquid in the drum for balancing. The washer doesnt use that liquid for laundry. The odor smell - you can get rid of it by cleaning your washer. Run empty cycle with bleach and hot water at least once a month. Also use washer cleaner - Tide recommended for a nice cleaner smell. You can get it from any supermarket.
