Question about Archos AV 500 Digital Media Player

MASSIVE problems, need urgent help!

Hey guys

I bought my AV500 3months ago, brand new, in the box.

Just recently it wasnt being recognised by any computer i would plug it into. It then saw it, but i couldnt access it.

We hadnt gotten around to sorting that problem, but then- literally JUST now I went to charge it up (as it turned off on me today when it shouldnt have and wouldnt turn on again)

Its been skipping a bit, which i over looked.

But when Ive got, say one song on from that bands album, within a playlist, it would then start playing all the songs in that album, instead of continuing on to playing the different songs i'd entered into the playlist.

So thats been happening a lot which has annoyed me

But it turned off today as i said, when it wasnt flat.

So ive just now gone to charge it, and as soon as ive plugged it in the screens come on (the normal blue Archos start up screen) but it doesnt go off. The green "on" light is on but not the charge one.

Ok, i thought, thats fine. I'll take out the charger and try to turn it back on.

Nope, it just comes up but then turns straight off again

Even with the charger in, it keeps the intro screen on permanently and i cant turn it on via the "on" button to run/use the device.

As soon as i pull out the charger it switches off.

Its SO damn new, NEVER EVER been dropped, miss-used, miss treated, infact its hardly seen ANY use till recently.

Im SO angry about this!!

It was so expensive, even though i bought it on ebay, it was still brand new.

I bought it from the UK, had it sent to me back in Australia to try to put on all the songs etc i wanted before travelling, and now im living in the UK

It was a mission trying to get any data on this stupid thing also. Absolute friggin nightmare and zero back up support or updates/downloads/after care from Archos. Theyre useless.

I REALLY need help guys please!

Does anyone know where/who the service company is to get to fix my unit?

I need it fixed asap as nobody has been helpful in replying at all or even suggesting to get it fixed by the manufacturer.
I cant find anywhere on the net for the UK or global

Have exactly the same problem on my AV500 (30GB) and have done for the past 2 years. Am only getting round to sorting it out now. Will be phoning Archos support tomorrow.

    Did you find a solution?

  • cetfly Feb 27, 2008

Hey Stannard... i tried that number today but its just engaged so im guessing its either wrong or theyve stopped using that one.

Can you help me out at all?

I dont think i have that anymore unfortunately.
Looks like im gonna have to pay for it.
Sucks, coz mines only 3months old when it happened and yours is 2 years and youre getting it fixed for free. Murphys Law hey.

I cant see it being a massive cost though. Seems like something simple and may have even been a manufacturers error/problem with circuitry.
I like how they expect you to send it in THEN they give you a cost after. Nice one.
Id rather a total, worst-case-scenario cost so they cant then jack it up as high as they want once its fixed.

Did you have to prove purchase?
I bought mine on ebay from someone here. It was brand new, sealed in factory box. Unwanted gift
I registered the serial numbers and no problems with all that.
Ive tried chasing up the lady i bought it from in the UK for a receipt but she's not there

Cheers mate, yeah let me know what they say!
Where are they located in the UK?
And how much are they likely to charge you for it

Here is their support number mate: 020 79490115

Like I said a minute ago (in the guest post) they were good on the phone, tried to fix it but in the end told me to send it in. Took it to the Post Office yesterday so I'll let you know how it goes on.

West Yorks. It cost me £4.75 to send it recorded (insured to £500) and their was no mention on the phone of a charge for the repair (My understanding is that under the Sale of Goods Act they would have to repair it and replace it at no cost anyway).

  • stannard Dec 08, 2007

You'd probably need to ask them about it on the phone.

    Here is a quote direct from the email they sent me;

    2. Include a copy of the original purchase receipt (proof of
purchase from the place bought). A credit card or bank card debit note
is not an acceptable form of proof of purchase. In the case that you
cannot supply a proof of purchase, we will e-mail to you a repair cost
letter within seven days of receipt of the product.

Maybe a print off of your eBay purchase would be enough, couldn't say for sure. I bought mine direct from (back in Dec '05 lol) so was just able to print off the receipt from my "members area".

Like I said you could use the Sales of Goods Act to get them to repair it at no cost, because it isn't "fit for purpose".

    Post here how things go.

Youre the first people to even reply to this post.
I emailed Archos months and months ago now, infact, on the same day as posting here on Oct 18th.
Havent heard anything back, and im even registered as a purchaser of their products with serial number etc.
I cant find any phone numbers to call in the UK to try to get ANYone to fix it. I dont give a crap about warranty, i just want it fixed. Im thinking its something to do with the electronics of the charging circuit

To keep people updated. I have sent my AV500 to Archos Repair Dept. Their phone support seemed fine. Hopefully their turn around time will be as good too.

Mic to PC

This mic is a condenser type microphone. It needs phantom power (48v) to operate. Might want to buy a USB mic preamplifier box, like an M-Audio product, which will provide phantom power, xlr/1/4 inch inputs and USB output.

Xbox 360 controller left analog stick

If you bought it brand new, contact Microsoft ASAP.

Otherwise, no luck. Just an unfortunate side affect of playing a 360.

Brand new miter saw/ran for 10 hours power was not consistent, then nothing

What part of the motor has blown? There is the armature and field coil and they won't always need replacing at the same time. There are brushes as-well, but as they are quite cheap I'm guessing you have been quoted on one or both of the motor parts to be replaced. Have you asked the repair guys for a report. They should be able to suggest a reason for what has blown and why by looking at the faulty parts. Although most manufacturers and service agents have discretion over warranty claims, if your machine is more than a few months over htere is almost definately noting you can do on the warranty side of things.

Problem with USB Flash

It is possible the memory stick is faulty. Are you using xp or vista? If so it should be recognised instantly. I bought one the same a couple of weeks ago, and it recognised it instantly, and I'm using xp.

Try it on another computer if possible, even where you purchased it. Just tell them you think it's faulty. If it works on that computer then you have a problem with either your usb ports or you have a virus.
