All of a sudden is Write Protected

Is there a lock icon on the drive anywhere? If so, there is some kind of switch there that you need to move to unlocked.

Try right-clicking on the drive, select Properties and then look for a checkbox that locks the drive.

Try editing the registry:

How to remove the write protect on a fantom databank usb flash drive

Why would you try regedit on this? Depending on what files you are trying to delete you should be able to just right click on them and bring up the properties, once you do that you can change them or if you really want them gone just format the drive. Don't use safe mode for this just boot up the computer install the drive once the operating system sees it you should be able to change the properties using the above method.

My PC (or friends) doesn't recognise my Databank usb2.0 64GB flash

Try the stick in another device and report back if you can read and write to the stick on that device.

Plug other USB things into that port to see if the port is good.

Although rare, some USB things allow themselves to be inserted backwards.

500 GB Fantom Drive not recognized on either of my Macs. Tried Firewire and usb; blinking light turns to steady red.Worked fine for about 2-3 years.

The symptoms don't look too good. Looks like the host controller is querying the hard disk (blink) and not liking the answer - or lack thereof (red).

It looks like the internal disk is defective. Sometimes the disk can be (possibly partially) recovered by disassembling the enclosure and mounting it in another enclosure or directly inside a compatible desktop PC.

Fantom Drive problem

Try connecting it to a Windows XP Pro pc. Right click on "My Computer", left click on "Manage". Once the new management console opens, left click on "Disk Management". If the USB drive is recognized by the pc, you will be able to right click on it, and select "Delete Partition". WARNING: YOU ARE DELETING EVERYTHING ON THE DRIVE! Once it's done, right click on the drive again, and select "Create New Partition". Proceed thru the wizard that pops up, and format it. You will have a choice of using FAT32, but, if the partition is larger than 32 GB, it will fail (it's a Windoze limitation), so NTFS is your only choice, unless you use a 3rd party utility, Win98 (supports huge FAT32 partitions, 4 TB, I think), or Linux.(preferred). Good Luck, hopefully everything will work out fine. T-Power

Problem with my PC recognizing my external hard drive

If you know the files are there and the drive cannot be read then there must be a read error, the only other thing to try is a different usb or firewire port as the port itself may not be reading the drive. Try it first by putting in a different port while the pc is on then plugging in and then restarting if the device is not recognised. You may also try the drive in a friends pc to see if it is port trouble and not the drive
