Question about GE Monogram ZISS480NRSS 48" Built-In Side-By-Side Refrigerator (ZIS-S480NRSS, ZIS S480NRSS)

1 Answer

My refrigerator is a GE Monogram ZISS480NRGSS S/N SH031008. The temperature in both the freezer and the fresh food sides increased and did not go down. A technician came in and changed a valve (I do not know the correct name) that goes behind the ice drawer (the old unit is marked Invensys K-75187 S-86). The unit worked properly for about a week and then the refrigerator area's temp. starte going up while the freezer continued to work properly. I replaced the FF Damper Repair Kit and the unit worked well for 3 days. Yesterday, both sides' temp started going up again. This morning the freezer temp was back to normal but the refrigerator temp has stayed around 47F. I have tested the damper operation and it is working properly.

Hi Sea Breeze. Thanks for your comment. I located the box. Do you have any instructions on how to open the box without damaging anything there? Also, the compressor stopped and it was cold. I reset the breaker and it started running again. Whatever is happening seems to be erratically. Could the thermostat be the culprit? Thanks

  • willie_moral May 22, 2009

The problem I have right now is that the unit is in a custom install and I will need help to pull it out. I can access the system board from the front, if you can tell me how to pull it out. Thanks,

  • willie_moral May 22, 2009

Right now it is running. I intend to let it run overnight and see what happens when it reaches the set temp and the compressor cycles off. If it does not start then we have a problem.

  • willie_moral May 22, 2009

I tend to agree with you. If I need to take the unit out, I will have someone come over on Saturday. Do you know how I can purchase a service manual for this unit?

  • willie_moral May 22, 2009

What is your time zone and what is the best time to call you in case I need to call you for help in replacing those two parts?

I observed the unit since last night and it worked perfectly until about 4 hours ago when the temp started raising again. At this point I noticed that the compressor is very hot and the condenser fan is not working. The fan did work since last night until about four hours ago. Any idea about what is causing this?

  • willie_moral May 30, 2009

Hi Sea Breeze: Are you available. It looks like I'm in trouble. I ordered both the replacements for the system board and the condenser fan and something seems to be wrong. My main board original part number is WR55X10383 and the replacement is listed as WR55X10560. However, the new board is twice the size of the original and the connectors are all different. Likewise with the condenser fan, the original number is WR60X10083 and the replacement is listed as WR60X10185, but the connector is different. Any idea what should be done? If you are available, I can probably give you a call.

I have some good news to report. After our tel. conversation, the fan kept switching on and off until I realized that the a/c unit in the kitchen was on. I thought that the cold air could be screwing up the temp. reading. After turning off the a/c unit, the fan has remained on continuosly and the temp in both the refrigerator and the freezer continue to go down.

We need to have a look at the main control board part number WRO2X11838 Tell me if the compressor is running while no cooling or if stopped. Unplug refrigerator and see if the top of compressor is too hot to keep you hand on. My drawing show the control bord in the area of the compressor and inside a box. Let me know if it has burn marks on both sides. Thanks, Let me know, Sea Breeze

OK, The part about the tripping the breaker is the part I don't like. Your compressor needs a kick to get it going normally. The part is called a start capacitor. Yours may be bad along with the motor starter. I need you to unplug and with the panel behind the refrigerator removed, Mark all wires going into and out of the compressor. Before we go too far I need you or someone to check the windings inside the compressor. I think you did visit my web page its talking about an Air conditioner. Same here before we get too deep into this we need to check the compressor to see if it's worth going forward. I know you are ready to get it going, If you want you can call 864-487-4851

The compressor has 3 terminals coming out of is labeled S, R and C. We don't want to mix them up when you remove them as for the control board, that model the box has some sheet metal screws keeping it together. The board would also be a place to see if there is a problem. Like burn marks or loose connections. The part that tells the compressor to start begins with thermostat goes to the board and the board relays it back to compressor. If the relay on the board is bad then the compressor cannot get going good.

Sorry you are in that position, I myself have that happen. I am not sure you can reach the screws and it appears the screws are attache on the back side of the refrigerator. But if you think you can reach it you may need a 1/4 nut driver 5/16 nut driver and a phillips head, the box may be mounted to the steel frame and off set I just don't want the board damaged until we know whats happening. I 'm here trying to think how I could do that. Even so you need to get back there. The way your refrigerator is responding is why I it's the mother board or compressor start relay and capacitor.

Yes, that is a good idea for now and we will pick up were we left off. With the compressor running and will be running until, this is something we both can think about. The compressor is not restarting so easy and cannot start and stop without a high amperage. I am almost sure it is one of those things. If you see the board is ok the the next step is to change the start relay and capacitor. If you get to that part change them both. There is something call a 3 in 1. Ask your local AC supplier. That will give it a little more kick to start. With it you have no need for a start relay, it's built in.

I am on the east cost New York time, South Carolina. I I work here with my sites and build websites with Adobe CS4 and about 8 hours from now I will sleep. Any time, If I do't answer leave your number and name on voice mail and I will get with you then. I have been trying to find a manual for you all I have is a GE Profile/Artica service manual. I do think your model is related. I just need the time to go and compare the mother boards.

It's possible the fan is the only reason for this. But until you confirm that the fan is getting 120 volts at the time you see it stopped I need to consider the board or fan. I know that don't help you much. Its happend to me 3 trips to the same home and on the third visit is when I noticed the condensor fan stopped. If I were you I would fix it so I could catch the fan stopped while it still had house voltage. That would stettle this for sure.

GE monogram refrigerator too cold

There is a balance between the freezer and fridge. Reduce the freezer temp and see what the fridge temp does. By reduce I
mean make the freezer warmer. If it is set too cold the fridge gets colder.

Ge monogram side by side freezer is at -5 fridge at 56 fans running evap even frost pattern, damper is open when the door is open cold air comes from the freezer when closed does not get cold

If you are showing a frost pattern iside the freezer and higher temperatures in fresh food compartment that is a sign of defrost failure. What is happening is the airflow to the fresh food section is being restricted by a large blok of non defrosted condensate behind the rear pane you see the frost pattern own. I am sending a manual if you like to follow along and ask questions but as I see from your discription this is what most likely happening. Your model does defrost cycle through the motherboard and has no defrost timer. So the most likely cause is you Defrost heater or defrost thermostat are defective. Here is the heater and instructions on how to test heater Click Here=> WR51X322 Heating Element and Defrost Thermostat=> WR50X10088 Defrost Thermostat

Here is the service manual=> GE Monogram Refrigerator Service Manual
You can find those two part numbers here also=> WR51X322 Defrost Heater
and Defrost Thermostat Here=> WR50X10088 Defrost Thermostat
Should you have any questions I will be here to assist you or on my sites, Thank You Sea Breeze
Also make sure none of the lower vents are closed inside fresh food compartment that will also restrict airflow. Manually defrost ing the freezer will give you about another week to resolve this problem should it turn out as defrost problems. You will need Adobe Reader to open the manual I sent you=> free download.

Temperature does not go below 59 deg. refrigerator side.

Auto Damper models, The Auto Damper model refrigerator has
two controls and both have capillary sensing.
The Auto Damper controls the fresh
food temperature and the Freezer Temperature
Control guides the freezer temperature.
The fresh food compartment temperature
is maintained by a damper assembly located
at the back of the temperature control
housing. Changes in air temperature
cause the damper door to open and close.
A control rod and gear connect the fresh
food control knob to the damper control.
Turning the fresh food control knob to the
COLDEST position increases the flow of
freezer air into the fresh food section. The
freezer compartment temperature control
warms at a faster rate and cools at a slower
rate, increasing the compressor run time
necessary to maintain a satisfied freezer
temperature control.
Turning the fresh food control knob to a
WARMER setting decreases the flow of
chilled air into the fresh food section. The
freezer compartment temperature control
warms at a slower rate and cools at a faster
rate, decreasing the compressor run time
necessary to maintain a satisfied freezer
temperature control.
It is ver possible that the auto damper has failed and will need to be cosidered as a likely cause. I think I need to replace the thermistor ZISS480NRGSS

You can get exploded view drawings of your refrigerator from any of the appliance part dealer web sites or the GE web site. Simply enter your refrigerator's model number in the search box and click SEARCH. Once you get your drawing, you can see what needs to come apart in order to give you access to whatever part you want. You can also order the replacement part. Good luck.

GE Monogram Side by Side 42" Freezer light is lit on front panel.

The defrost timer is what I think you are asking. It is behind a cover near the light, The timer puts the fridge in defrost ever 6 to 8 hours. If the timer is bad it will stop the cycle of defrost and cause the freezer and the cold food section to warm spoiling the food and increase the freezer temp. Try turning the timer screw clockwise until you hear the fridge compressor stop. If after this listen for a crackling noise that will be the sound of defrost taking place. If doing this starts defrost, you will need to replace the timer.
