Question about GE Profile Spacemaker Over-the-Range Microwave

1 Answer

Shuts itself off mid cooking cycle -- as if unplugged; then after 5 minutes or so turns itself back on as if it was just plugged in (forgetting all previous settings)

My GE Profile Spacemaker 2.0 over stove microwave shuts off (everything - as if it is unplugged) when cooking over a stove heating steaming food. Then, about 5 minutes later, it starts back up again. It also will shut itself off mid cycle if we have used one of the sensor cooking settings to heat something requiring more than one cooking cycle. Again, it will turn itself back on eventually.

My GE Profile Microwave is a JVM2070CH02. I found that the fan had literally fallen off the motor's rotor. I replaced it, but alas, it still stops after heating food for a while. The sound is similar to what you sent. I do believe that the thermostat is the issue as you suggest. Is it the sensor placed on the bottom of the inside of the cabinet right behind the LED panel? -- or is it somewhere else?
    Thanks for your help!

The magnetron is probably overheating, tripping the magnetron thermostat, which kills the power.

Then when it cools, the thermostat closes and power is restored again.

This can happen if the vents are blocked, if the magnetron is failing, or if the internal cooling fan is not running.

    When I say internal
cooling fan, I do not mean the hood vent exhaust fan which you can turn
    on and off manually.

    I'm instead talking
about the internal fan which comes on automatically whenever you
    microwave.

We have a sound clip of what a microwave should sound like when the cooling fan and high voltage section are operating here.

    It is vital that the
cooling fan runs, or the magnetron will be destroyed.

Is that fan running when you try to microwave?

Also, please reply back with your model number so we can help you.

I am encountering the same problem but my microwave is a free standing counter unit. Can I fix this myself or do I just buy a new microwave?

If you just put the fan blade back on, it will almost certainly fall off again.

The best bet is to slightly rough up the contact area of the shaft with sandpaper and use a little super glue to hold the blade assembly on the shaft, and let it set a few minutes before using it.

I always recommend that you use the hood vent exhaust fan when cooking on the stove top to keep heat, steam, and grease out of the controls.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

Shuts itself off mid cooking cycle -- as if unplug - d:%5cele%5crepair%5cmicrowave%5cge_hotpoint%5cmini_manual_behind_grille_small.jpgdee77f7.jpg

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number from the tag on the oven here.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number from the tag on the unit) for more information & help.

I submitted this photo with my solution, but it failed to show up. Here's where the mini-manual may be.

Sounds like stuck relay contacts. Magnetrons need a high voltage source which is controlled by a micro to relay and then from relay to voltage source. Even the turntable works via a relay.

Microwave vent turned on by itself and won't turn off

The HMV9305 has an automatic vent turn-on feature. It senses heat, possibly from the oven or range beneath, and turns on the exhaust fan until temps return to normal. Sometimes this may take 4-5 minutes, which can seem like an eternity of listening to the blower run, but it is a safety feature designed to prevent damage to the microwave from excessive heat generated by the cooktop or oven beneath it.

The first thing I would suggest is a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If that doesn't work, leave it unplugged for about 5 minutes.

Let us know what you find out.

DOOR SHOWS OPEN BUT IT IS NOT

After self cleaning the range the door won't open....
The oven door lock needs approximately 1 hour to cool down before the oven door can be opened after a self cleaning cycle has finished. If the lock does not open after the oven has cooled down, you can try....1) Unplugging the range or shut off the circuit breaker for 5 minutes. Plug the range back in or turn on the circuit breaker. Set the clock and try moving the door lock lever or opening the door. 2) Set the self-clean cycle again and only allow it to work for 15 minutes. Cancel the self-clean cycle and allow the oven to cool. Gently try moving the door lock lever or opening the door.

Hope this may help;

Microwave oven turns off

It could be an overheating magnetron. There is a thermostat inside (mounted to the side of the magnetron) which senses excessive heat and opens up, disconnecting the power to the oven. If that's the case, unplugging it and plugging it back in will not fix it. It will come back on by itself after it cools down. That's another indication that it might be a thermostat kicking out. You might try to further characterize the failure: - happens only when cooking on full power? - also happens when cooking on a low power level? - shuts down every time you use it? - only shuts down after XX amount of time cooking? Once you characterize it more, I can make further suggestions. It may also be a bad connection on the control panel.
