Question about Whirlpool AWM8143 Front Load Washer

Open Question

AWM8143 stopped during cycle now door open flashing.

I have a AWM8143 that has stopped during the cycle nad now flashes the door open LED.

Coming from a strong electronics service background I have checked the door switch and bi-metalic door lock and this is fine.

I found a copy of the AWM8143 service manual and my question is this.

Page 5 of 22 outlines the resistances for the motor and pins 6 -7 should read 68.7 +/-7% Ohms. This is for the speed sensor or tacho located on the back of the motor. Unfortunately mine only reads 12.2 Ohms which would indicate a short in the windings. I would have thought this highly unlikely, however is the manual correct at 68.7 Ohms ? all the other resistances measure okay.

    Problem solved myself.

Purchased a new motor as when I checked it out on the counter it measured 67 Ohms on the Tachometer coil.

Fitted the motor but still no motor drive.

Removed the Timer assembly and one of the Three main Omron power relays had a total dry joint on it. I decided to completely re-solder the complete board with a leaded Multicore crystal 511 solder as the lead free solder that was probably used in the re-flow is rubbish. The user interface board that has all the buttons on the front panel looked okay and is unlikely to fail.

The new motor is also completely different from the old motor to look at with the tacho area revised.

Basically from an engineering perspective this is a very well made machine, however it lacks the attention to detail and some decent soldering. As vibration is the nature of the beast with a washing machine so any bad soldering is going to cause havoc with multiple faults.

I suspect if you call a repair guy you are going to get ripped to fix one of these as they will not board level repair this and sell you all new module parts like the complete timer assembly.

The motor cost me NZ$314.07 total. The service manual off the net was a great help. Possibly the old motor will still work so I will keep it in case of trouble in the future and I may try to rewind the tachometer coil if it doesn't work (difficult job).

I now know the AWM8143 machine in detail so if yours fails and you have an electronics component level background then e-mail me and you can repair it yourself.

SOURCE: Whirlpool Gas Dryer

Yes, that is most likely the problem. Once the glow bar igniter glows so hot, the switch opens & drops power to the igniter.(The radiant sensor has continuity while cold & open when a flame is present.) At the same time, by opening it redirects power to the valve coils allowing them to open & gas flow to the burner assembly. The dying glow of the igniter fires the gas. However, if your igniter glows, the radiant sensor is good. In this case, you'd need to replace the gas valve solenoids.

1. First instead of just unplugging the machine, try switching the circuit breaker for that socket off for about 10minutes and see if that resolves the issue. Also pull out the detergent dispenser and reach all the way in to the back there is a small plastic flapper valve. Move it from side to side with your finger this will rest code.

2. If that does not work, check the drain could be clogged. All you do is take off the bottom front panel (there are 3 screws). After the panel is off, there is a turn knob right in front in the middle. Simply unscrew it and remove any thing in the "catch". Screw back (re-attach) the knob and you are good to go.

3. In the manual, the instruction for an F06 code (electrical problem) is :

Select PAUSE/CANCEL twice to cancel the cycle. Select DRAIN/SPIN if there is excessive water in the washer. Re-select cycle and press START. If the problem remains, call for service.

After that, you might try unplugging then plugging it in again.

The F06 code is generally an electrical fault. · Check wiring to motor and replace drive motor if necessary. Check the wire harness that goes to all your connectors on the Motor, MCU, and CCU. I have seen a loose wire connector do this F06 error.

If all checks ok, then its likely a faulty CCU, check your owners manual, some are covered under warranty for up to 5 yrs.

ngafm at your service

I believe the loud humming you describe is an electronic problem. And is not worth changing parts randomly and spending unnecessary funds in this fashion!
my advice is a hands on experience repair person that does this day in and day out!
Whirl pool units have many variables! and for the price of randomly changing two or three parts you could have a certified tech finished the repair at a lesser cost to you!
Unfortunately i can not be there hands on or I would be happy to do a hands on diagnoses for you.
Bless You ngafm.
Please leave me a good rating, before you sign off the site.
Ps. Let me know the end result and which electronic part was the culprit..
Thank you

Zanussi zdt 6053 usually will not run full cycle (on any cycle) but stops with constant error beeps. But it is draining ok and sometimes goes full cycle (not often) Any ideas?

Could be anything!
If you suspect that there is a fault then it will be displayed by blinking LED "END OF CYCLE". As the display of failure in hexadecimal code it can flash up to max. 15 times than short pause and after that repeat fault code. You must to count the number of times the LED "END OF CYCLE" flash up.

Example from user manual: Anti-flood device is activated.
- continuous flashing of the indicator light of the running programme
- 3 intermittent audible signals
- 3 flashes of the END OF CYCLE indicator light
(which means "i30" fault code, the cycle is interrupted and the
drain pump switches on).
Possible causes:
Water leakage from the tub - sump and various connections
(pump, upper spray arm duct etc.); floating sensor blocked
mechanically; microswitch faulty; fill solenoid blocked
mechanically; circuit board faulty (solenoid triac short-circuited);
wiring faulty.
26226179-aipk5px1bmfkdpsmrgevaqwn-3-1.jpg Could be also:
To cancel a washing programme in progress:
- Open the dishwasher's door.
- Press the programme selection/cancel button for about 3 seconds,
until the indicator light of the running programme turns off and the
END OF CYCLE indicator light flashes, indicating that the running
programme has been cancelled and that the machine has
returned to setting mode. It is now possible to select another
washing programme. If a new washing programme will be
selected, check that there is detergent in the detergent dispenser.

NOTE: only during the drying phase, if the dishwasher's door will be opened and remains open for more then 30 seconds, the running programme will be automatically cancelled and the machine will return to setting mode. This will happen, always only during the drying phase, also when the machine is switched off by pressing the
On/Off button and remains switched off for more then 30 seconds.

We had the same issue: the cycle would start then stop, with the door open light coming on. It turned out to be a faulty contact in the door. Took a technician 15 minutes to fix.

Door Lock LED flashing

Hello, This depends on how old your machine is mine is now 7 years old so I do not want to invest in long term soltions. So I repaired my own, I bought a new interlock and replaced the old one that did not work. So I shorted out the three links that go to the interlock, the machine now shows the lock is always on and you can open the door during the wash cycle so BEWARE. Also if you have never wired a plug or fixed basic electrics DO NOT DO THIS. 1. Turn off power and unplug. (Very Important) 2. Remove lid you will need torx drivers. 3. Unscrew door interlock from the front of the machine. 4. Lift out interlock. Try replacing the interlock with spare first (about £15). 5. If new interlock does not work do the following. 6. Put Interlock back on without wires attched to it. 7. From car spares shop buy spade conectors and create a three way shorting link (insulate well). 8. Put shorting link into each of the wires that go to interlock. Safely tie up wire to a loom (do not let dangle) 9. Shut the door remove hands and try starting the machine. 10. If that works put the machine back together. And warn people that the DOOR CAN BE OPENED DURING WASH CYCLE and STARTED WITH DOOR OPEN. So check when the machine has stopped properly.
