You need to check what your computer model number ,since it's a compaq it should be at the back of the computer eg compaq presario 5612 etc.

Tell us what that is .

Try downloading the drivers from the Compaq website or do a search useing the model number and the word "driver".Reinstalling the drivers and the computer would detect the card.

Three options to solve your problem:-

    (1) Check for the model of your Compaq go to the website http://www.compaq.com/country/cpq_suppor... and download the drivers for your computer there.

    (2) check if your sound card is built in the motherboard and if it is, look on the motherboard for the model number, sometimes it's written flat on the motherboard next to the PCI slots, then do a search for the name of the driver file by useing the motherboard Model number and the word driver and when you get the file name search for the words "download" "driver filename".Download and install it after you've found it.

(3)If the sound card is a PCI card look for the Model number or FCC id and use it to search for the driver file simular to the proceedure mentioned in option 1.

    Regards

Re installed Windows XP Pro from virgin disc, now have no sound system.Motherboard has VGA sound lan onboard but think that drivers were lost on xp installation.Computer is SVA (Thailand) In device manager...

Windows has drivers BUT, in many cases they are not the ones designed for your Motherboard. If you have the CD for the Motherboard you can install the drivers from that. Otherwise, you'll need to get the NAME of EACH of the devices (ie. NVidia for Graphics, Hitachi for Disk, Ricoh for Ethernet, etc.) to be able to determine what drivers you need. In many cases, the Motherboard Drivers are to be Installed BEFORE you install Windows. May be possible to install after windows install tho. Need to get a device listing first.
GOTO Device Manager in Control Panel and broswe through the listings for each of your devices to get the maker names.

Mother board cd

no, to format you just need OS CD, such as windows, Linux, Mac or others
motherboard CD is only contain the driver to run system of it including sound card, Video, Lan, modem, PCMCIA, or any components on your computer....
except your motherboard vendor gives you one more CD's, it called "recovery CD's".
recovery CD's is back up CD of your OS from the vendor, it including first OS, and motherboard driver also, so if you have it, you just have to boot the recovery CD,...no need to using OS CD

No sound device

? mark means no sound driver install or errors in Device Manager. u can check ur mother board cd room or can search ur audio driver in web or below may be ur answer

Question: Where do I locate motherboard sound drivers?
Answer: Users who have motherboards with on-board audio (often with VIA, Realtek, or C-Media chipsets) may have issues with their audio or AC'97 errors in Device Manager. Often this is caused because the operating system has been reinstalled and the motherboard chipset drivers are not installed. To resolve this issue try following the below steps.
Let Windows redetect drivers
If you have not recently reinstalled Microsoft Windows it's possible that your audio drivers are simply corrupt. Open Device Manager and remove all devices under "Sound, video and game controllers" and any "Other devices". Once removed reboot the computer and let Microsoft Windows re-detect the audio drivers.
Motherboard chipset drivers
Reinstalling the motherboard chipset drivers will usually resolve this issue. If your computer came with a Motherboard CD, install the chipset drivers from the CD and the sound drivers if also available on the CD.
If you do not have a motherboard CD, obtain the motherboard chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer.
Sound card drivers
If after installing the motherboard chipset drivers you continue to have issues install the sound drivers. We suggest you download the sound drivers from the computer manufacturer or motherboard manufacturer.
A listing of motherboard manufacturers and their drivers can be found on our motherboard chipset drivers page.
