Tecra A4 Will not boot from CD, Floppy, or HD after POST

I can get to the boot screen. But after POST laptop just shutsdown completely. I have tried booting from DOS disk. Booting from CD. Sometimes the screen will flash like it is trying to load software, but it will just shutdown. Any ideas as to why?
Thanks in Advance for any help.

The Laptop gets past POST. Starts to boot from Knoppix or UBCD via CD/DVD drive, (Splah screen appears), then laptop just shutsdown. Tried booting DOS from external floppy-- same outcome.
    Not a ovrerheat problem.
Ques.: HD not installed while trying to boot from CD/DVD or floppy drive. Can this be the problem???

Hi !
How much time(seconds) it takes to shut down after you turn it on?

First try to put your battery out and then try to boot on AC power only. It might be an bad power supply and empty battery that can't be charged.
If you have the same problem, then check if the power button is damaged or dirty and stays pressed even when you release it.
Find if you can hear some noise from the fan(s) inside and check if the cooling holes are closed with dirt and dust. Might be the fans are not running or fan holes closed that make some components (e.g. processor) to get wormer than they should be!

You didn't say how much time after you turn it on, it shuts down.

Now try to power up and first you get (any) picture, start pressing 'PAUSE' key until picture freezes.
(this wil put your laptop in a kind of an idle state and it will stay so until you press any other key)

Leave it like that for some time (few minutes)!

    Does it turn off now?

If it turns off, than you might have problem with (over)heating of some component, even cooling system is running well. Because of some damaged electronic component in VGA or RAM module, even on the HDD or CD board it might pull more power than needed, that makes it to overheat, and then to turn off the system.

You may try to put out your HDD and CD and see if your laptop will turn off.
Also if you have more than one module of RAM, try with each one separately.

All this is to determine where the problem is.
While doing this, you don't need to get to operating system.
Let's find what is causing it (turning off of your laptop), and then you may try to get to OS.

    Regards.

Windows XP does not have the SATA driver on the install CD.
You need to download the SATA driver for your model laptop from the Toshiba WEB support/download page.
If the laptop has floppy drive, then copy the SATA driver to the floppy and when you boot up with the Windows XP install CD and then press F6 to install the SATA drivers which is on the floppy as instructed..

Dead hard drive, replacement not working

The solution is that you simply cannot go out and buy a replacement HD. You have to buy TOSHIBA's replacement HD.

They make a 40, 80, 160 and 320 GB HD for Tecra MV2's etc.- Other HDs simply will not detect.

Hi, your Windows XP install CD doesn't have SATA drivers for the hard drive included, so it's not able to address your hard drive. You can't disable SATA in the BIOS to make it work since your hard drive is still SATA. You'll need to get a 3.5" floppy disk and drive if your laptop doesn't have one. They make external 3.5" USB floppy drives that will work.

1. download the SATA drivers for your laptop (iastor.sys and inf)
2. copy the drivers to your floppy disk (about 6-7 files)
3. plug the floppy drive into your laptop
4. boot to the Windows XP CD
5. as soon as the installation starts, it asks you to "Press F6 to specify RAID or controller drivers" - Press F6 now
6. When setup asks for it, point it to the floppy drive
7. Installation will continue and find your SATA hard drive

Ta-da! Rock on with your bad self.

Toshiba Tecra 8100 will not boot, even the toshiba boot screen not displayed

http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=BIOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

Thats a link to info about bios updates on the tosh website. If you're not getting to the toshiba screen then POST has not completed which means that either there's a hardware problem or the bios is corupt. If you're sure the RAM is ok try flashing the Bios.

Problem is though, to make the bios update disc, you need a working computer.

and, err, It'll probably have to be a toshiba!
(sorry, not my fault!)

The inverter board on your laptop is failing. It is a board that changes DC to AC voltage, and powers the backlight. It needs to be replaced.

Try taking the battery out and use only the AC. If everything turned out fine, it could be a problem on the battery or on the port.

Laptop boots to the F10 and F12

this is as if you haven't got an installed operating system and requires it to be installed, but you have to enable your cdrom as the first boot device. Put your O.S disc in and reboot; then press enter to boot up from disc.
