Starter often just clicks wont turn over every time

Have gone through several new batteries thinking that was the problem, however when I turn the key on the riding mower 50% of the time it just clicks. If I keep trying it will eventually turn over and start. Very weird. The plugs are good, oil filter new, oil is new. Dont' know where to go from here...

i would guess, you either have a poor connection to your battery or a flat battery. test your battery before checking the starter. ok?

Wont start

the clicking noise is usually 2 things, step on try jump starting car and if starts have battery tested as it is probably bad (free testing at most chain auto stores), the other usual problem is that the starter has gone bad, when whoever tried turning off car while driving might have put into start mode and burnt out the starter when it engaged at high speed.

Are you sure your battery is good and able to take and keep a full charge? The only thing in the start circuit that could cause a big drain on the battery is a shorted starter. But if you can send power and it cranks okay, I don't think you have a bad starter.

Is the ignition key on when you crank it and have no spark? Does your distributor rotor turn when the engine is cranking?

I would try a new solenoid. If it clicks it should send power on to the starter on the big cable. Make sure all battery and ground connections are clean and tight. If still a problem, buy a voltmeter and learn how to do voltage drop tests. This will help find bad connections.

The clicking is the starter solenoid which is normal, the starter motor is not making a good contact due to it's worn, a starter replacement will fix the problem.

Starter relay clicks when you turn ignition key on

no this is either caused by a defective starter solenoid (on starter) or a defective positive battery (red) cable, both are common on this year of explorer.

Car wont start...sometimes

Sounds like a bad starter solenoid, usually cheapest and easiest to replace the starter and solenoid as a unit. It is always best to check for power between the solenoid and the starter with a test light, if the solenoid clicks but the test light doesn't light up you have found the problem in the solenoid.

1989 Toyota Camery Wont Turn Over

If you can turn the engine by hand, your starter has gone bad. Cables get hot because energy normally used to turn starter cannot and has to go somewhere! If you can't turn by hand, it's possible engine is seized.
