Can't get surround sound sound through tv mode, have sound only when cable box mode is on. I've tried hooking optical cable straight from receiver to tv and I've also tried AV jacks. Not sure.

The audio signal that your tv is producing is a stereo signal only - not surround. You should be able to manually put your receiver into a surround mode when using the tv input and get surround sound that way.

How can i hook my pc up to get sound threw tv and dvd w/surround sound

Hello,
You would need the following hardware from radio shack.
Male 3mm jack to RCA into the back of the tv.
Depending on how far the TV if from the computer would depend on size of cable.
Now you tv has surround sound?
Or
You want the computer to produce surround to your tv?
I would go with the RCA idea to give you some starting place to produce sound from the PC to the back of the TV. Now this same idea goes for hooking up mixers, amps, ECT
I hope this helps you in your projects

I want surround sound. How do I hook up my audio 5.1 RVC-884VBK, with my HDbox and LCD TV? It's too confusing. What hooks to what? Currently the HD box and blueray DVD is hooked straight to TV ...

Does you television have an "Optical Audio Output"? This would be the best and easiest way to get surround sound from your system. If your TV has an optical output the you can use an Optical Cable to connect the TV to the reciver. This way whatever you are watching from the TV will be in surround sound. The HDMI connection sends a surround sound signal from each device to the television. If you connect it to this output on the TV then make sure the optical output is turned on in you telivison's menu. If your TV does not have an Optical Audio Output then you will need to connect each optical output from the blu-ray and HDbox to your reciever. Your reciever will need to have two Input channels(one for each device). Then you can select that input to the device(blu-ray or HDbox) that you are using. The optical cable is the best way to go for surround sound because it is pure digital and produces the best sound. If the HDbox or Blu-Ray does not have an optical output then you will need the six rca jacks to get the surround sound. Let me know further info on what you have so I can assist you more.

Rear speakers no sound

you have to have it set to one of the sound settings to get surround sound , and if what you have hooked up does not have a digital connection ( optical or coax) you can not get dolby digital surround either
if it is the stereo your listening to then set a sound to get virtual surround sound ( unless you have a digital tuner that supports digital signal input

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound

I just finished setting up my system last night and was facing similar problems with sound/video from my PS3. The only option I could get working was to have the HDMI cable connected from the PS3 to the TV and then connect the Optical cable to the receiver for sound. I was under the impression that HDMI handles sound and video but for whatever reason the PS3 does not agree.

I have DTS sound and fantastic picture now through my PS3, hope this helps.

Cheers

Connect PS3 for playing/viewing blue-ray thru surround sound

Connect the PS3 to your TV with the hdmi cable and to the surround sound system with a digital optical cable, then set your PS3 to output sound through the optical port (through the sound options menu) and you're good to go!
