If it is an APX-500, the battery is in a holder between the neck and the tuner on the curved sides of the guitar. It should unlatch. The battery (9V) goes into the holder and is inserted and latches.

You have a broken ground either on the jack, the plug or internal in the amp. Check both connections first. I think you will find it. If not open the amp and check for broken wires, cracked solder joints, etc. While checking the connections resolder all connections no matter what they look like. Let me know how you make out.

Trying to patch an area and match the stain will be a futile exercise. You will need to refinsh the whole top. Often MANY coats of Nitro-Celluose laquer is used. You will wet sand with grits starting around 600 and working up to 4000 which is about as rough as copy paper. I have purchased the laquers from a company in Ohio in spray cans. Often a dozen coats and then a clear coat is applied with wet sanding between coats.
