You should have a dial that adjusts the stitch up or down to make it more narrow or lengthen the stitch. Try it on scrap fabric first until you find the stitch you wish. It will stay in that position until you want to change it.

SOURCE: My mother left me her Bernia (record/electronic)

Hi, well you must have been your moms favorite. I'm guessing the Bernina she left you was an Bernina 830 since I think this was the only electronic Record unless the 930 was also a Record electronic.
You have a wonderfull machine. You can find the manual you want here at Berninausa.com ... http://www.berninausa.com/news_detail-n486-i2238-sUS.html . Look for the model number on your machine and click on it. You can download the manual there for free.

Rick

SOURCE: My Bernina 730 record can only run the zig-zag

Sewing machines needs full service now and then (every 10 years will often do). The motor on the 730 series is actually as powerful as they get on domestic machines, and handles just about everything that fits under the pressure foot. Only if the machine has been used a lot over the years are the brushes worn down, but it might need new grease not matter how little it has been used.

However, the stitch applications can sort of gum or clog up if the machine has not been used for ages. Take a look in the manual and oil ever point suggested every time you take out the machine. Try them now and then on slow speed, that might get every function to run smoothly again.

This is as good a machine as any out there, favorably compared to any new machine under 500£. It sews perfect stitches on just about any material, and is well worth a full professional service (At a shop they will always recommend a new machine they want to sell you). All kinds of pressure feet and accessories are available in regular sewing shops and online.

Check with different shops for price on full service. This is a great machine what ever they tell you.

What are the correct settings for basteing on an elna excellence 730

Here's a manual for your machine:

ELNA eXcellence 730 Instruction Manual

If your machine does not have a "basting" stitch selection, you make your own basting stitch by:

* Setting the stitch length to the maximum
* Loosen the upper tension so the bobbin thread lies flat under the fabric

Then to gather or remove the basting stitch, it is easy to pull on the bobbin thread.

Is it possible to replace the stitch length lever (22 in manual) on a bernina record 730?

Most likely. If the lever has been damaged, it may be found by picking up a machine (for parts or repair)--check eBay. Check with your Bernina dealer. Frequently, they will have parts from used machines.

How do I set the dials on husqvarna viking 6000 sewing machine

The "dial" in the back is for decorative stitches which require a "programmer" to be inserted with the stitch formation you want to form. For a straight stitch no cam is required in the back of the machine. The three dials on the front:

Upper Left: Stitch selector
Upper Right: Stitch lenght
Lower: Stitch width

Using the upper left dial select the straight stitch picture
Using the upper right, choose your stitch lenght
Using the lower, choose your needle position, left/center/right

Bernina 730

try changing the needle--one for the fabric being sewed
also the zig zag could have a worn or damaged gear or cam
or there could be a timing problem.

Bernia artiata 730 - problem with hook

If you cannot get the hook back into place, raise the needle to it's highest position and then place the hook into the shuttle with the point of the hook at the bottom left. It should stay put as you return the retention ring or levers.

If this isn't the issue, please provide more information.
