Laptop keeps searching for unnecessary driver

I plugged a Targus usb hub into my laptop (Im running Vista) and now it is continually trying to find an install a driver for it. It doesn't need a driver - but my system keeps searcing for one.

I've check the Targus site. There are no drivers for my device - it says plug and play, no drivers required.

  • dsbrumitt May 20, 2009

    Thanks so much.

I have a Targus Ultra Mini 4-Port USB Model #PAO55U. I am running Vista. The hub works fine but the the system continues to search for a device driver to install - it keeps cycling and beeping.

I am looking as well - so far no luck.

  • dsbrumitt May 21, 2009

OK, I did exactly what you suggested. I uninstalled all USB hub drivers, shut down and then restarted and plugged the device back in. Again, a dialog box informs me that the device drivers have been installed and the device is working properly.... but then after a few minutes the system begins its endless search. It's a mystery! Thanks so much for your help. If you run across any solutions pleas post them here. I appreciate your efforts!

Might be a good idea to try picking up a driver anyways. Any kind of USB device whether it be a printer, a flash drive, or a USB hub requires a driver for communicating with the device. I'd suggest taking a look on Targus' website and downloading drivers specifically for your model of hub, for your OS. You might be pleasantly surprised.

Then the next question would be, what model of USB hub are you using and what OS is currently installed on your computer? I can try poking around some support sites to see if anyone else has come across this, as well as checking around to see if there's a generic USB hub driver that can be downloaded as well..

I'm having about the same level of luck, even just looking for a generic driver to see if that would get rid of the whole Vista looking for a driver constantly. Only other suggestion I can think of at this moment, would be to leave the hub plugged in, and try removing the device drivers associated with it from your Device Manager (If you're unfamiliar with how to get there, click on Start, right click on Computer and select Manage, then select the Device Manager listing, find the USB hub and any related USB hub devices, right click them an uninstall them, then unplug the hub, restart the computer, let it get all booted up and reinstall any missing device drivers if necessary, then plug the hub back in and see what happens there. Post back once you try this and lemme know what happens.

First thing you need to do is to know that the USB ports of your laptop is really working. Insert another usb devices or storage such a flash disk. If the flash disk being inserted is not recognized by the system then the usb port you had inserted is malfunctioning or it is defective. But if the other usb devices like the flash disk is working then your new bought mouse is defective. Try to plug the usb mouse to the other ports available in your laptop.

Targus Travel USB 2.0 4-port Hub

sometimes usb hard drives will not work through a usb hub.
if the drive works connected to the laptop but not the hub then that's how you'll have to use it.
it's also possible the laptop cannot power both the hub AND the drive, in whaich case you'll need a powered hub (one you plug in to the mains).

Targus mouse not recognized

What is the OS of your computer? This Targus mouse would work with Win 98, Win 2000 and Win XP. Vista was not mentioned. And if you are running Windows Vista for you laptop, then that could be the reason why it was not recognized by the computer.

Is this the wireless optical mouse? If yes, you need to follow the steps below to isolate the problem:

1. Connect the USB receiver into different USB ports of the computer.
2. Replace the batteries with the fresh ones.
3. Try connecting the mouse into different computer to see if you've got a defective mouse.

If you've tried everything and got the same problem, you may need to refer to the manufacturer, because I'm not sure if this mouse is a Plug-n-Play device or if it needs a driver.

Have a great day!

Power supply for Targus 4 hub usb 2

Most USB hubs do not need an external power supply, except when a connected USB device draws more power than the computer/laptop USB port can supply. In this case an external power supply will need to be connected to the USB hub.
Normally this would be a 5 volt power supply, but make sure the polarity on the connector matches the power connector on the hub, check the label on the hub, sometimes it states to power requirements of the hub as well as the polarity on the connector. Normally the pin on the hub's power connector is positive (ie. +5V)
