I have a Snapper self-propelled lawnmower and The starter cord will not pull out to get it started. What do I do next?

Hi Patricia,
There is probably a safety lever that has to be pulled back toward the handle in order to release the flywheel. (This lever is on the top side of handle.) Once you have it firmly against the handle it should start. To stop the mower, simply release the lever. There may also be a 2nd lever to engage the self-propelled (located under the handle). It may be difficult to start with this one pulled.

Try to start it using jumper cables to boost it from another battery. If it starts, your battery needs replacing.

My Toro Model 20070 that until now has always started on the first pull, won't start at all now. It started fine last week. It's getting spark (a little more yellow than blue). I replaced the plug,...

Hold the butterfly valve (behind air filter) open with a screwdriver, while somebody else tries to start it. Toro has had problems with atuomatic chokes. If it fires right up, thats the problem! If so, just wire it open, or contact Toro for a repair kit. Try using starting fluid, not carb cleaner, and spray directly into the head through the spark plug port. If you didn't do it already, blow out all the ports in the carb with compressed air, or carb cleaner. Also, be sure the safety lever is engaging correctly (top bar on handle) at the engine. Lawn mowers are pretty simple, so the problem is most likely simple too.

I have a Toro 20070 and it won't start. Doesn't seem to be engine but more in the pull rope. I engage the bar and the recoil pull stare seems locked. Suggestions?

there is a flywheel brake on them, possibly a malfunction there you will have to pull the top shroud off and see if maybe cable broke, that attatches to the brake which when you engage it so the eng. can rollover with pull start. It is a safety deal so that when you let go of handle the blade stops imediatly, Hope this helps

My lawnmower which is a TORO 6.5hp-Tecumseh engine won't start. When I pull the cord the valves start to move but on the second pull it seems to sieze up and blow some vapor out the exhaust. It ran fine...

It sounds like hydraulic lock. The carb is dumping to much fuel into cylnder. Pull the plug when it feels locked up and pull again, if it blows gas out of the plug hole you have carb problem. Maybe needle is ****, maybe float has a hole in it and is sinking causing flooding.

The drive shaft might just need to be oiled. Turn the mower over and locate the drive shaft, where it goes from the mower's blade up into the body of the mower. Lubricate the area of the shaft that disappears into the body with WD-40 or another lubricant, then turn the blade by hand (be careful!) and squirt some more oil.

Eventually the blade should become easier to turn, and then your pull cord should extend without getting stuck. Good luck!

you'll need to pull the starter. It sound like your Bendick's is bad. that's the upper gear drive assay. the only other res ion would be, low power to the starter, and not receiving an acquit amount of amp to reach the rpm's it needs. good luck

Toro GT5 lawnmower - the pull cord (to start the engine) only comes out about 3 inches - I'm afraid to pull to hard for fear of breaking the line.

First - remove spark plug and squirt 3mls of engine oil in there - replace spark plug and leave overnight.

Try pulling that start handle !
Two things may happen - it snaps or - it turns over.
If it turns over - prime fuel and start in choke setting.
If the cord snaps - undo the pull start block - and take it to a lawnmower spares depot, and buy some more cord. It's quite cheap.
Get the length right so you don't have too much.
Next - the engine is probably seized - so needs freeing up. You may be able to do this with the new cord, Otherwise - take the head off the cylinder and tap the piston down with a wooden drift while turning the crank.
Use a non-setting gasket sealant like hematite red to re-use the old gasket. Lawnmowers are quite resilient.
