SOURCE: the keyboard on my laptop has numbers and keys on it

Hi,
It sounds like the Num Lock is on.

Depending on the make of the laptop there is a few different ways to turn it off.
Either just hit the Num Lock key and see if it goes off, hold down Fn and hit the Num Lock key or hold down the shift key and hit the Num Lock key.

Regards.

Step 1:
Laptop or Desktop ?
ENABLE NUMLOCK KEYS USING REGITRY Check the LED light that indicates whether or not the Number Lock is enabled. If the light is on, press the "Num Lock" key on your keyboard. Look for the light to turn off, signaling that the Number Lock has been disabled. Change your Number Lock status at start up (Number Lock is disabled on start-up by default). Click "Start," then "Run" and type "regedit" to pull up the Windows Registry. Open the "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\" folder, then subsequently open the "Control Panel\" and "Keyboard\" folders. Double-click on "InitialKeyboardIndicators" and change its Data Value to "1," to disable Number Lock on start-up. A value of "2" would turn the Number Lock on after you log in, while a "0" value would result in it turning off after you log in.

CHANGE THE DEFAULT NUMLOCK KEY b> Go to the Start menu. From the Start menu choose "Run." Type in "regedit." Hit "OK" to open the regedit application. This allows you to change your computer's default settings. Navigate to the keyboard's default settings. Using the navigation bar at the left, choose "HKey_Users" then "Default" then "Control Panel" and finally "Keyboard." Look at the right side of the window. On the right are the various default options you can change for your keyboard. Double click on "InitialKeyboardIndicators" to change the NumLock default. A window will pop up. Change the NumLock default by entering a 0 or 2 in the "Value Data" field. Enter a 0 to have the NumLock set to off by default. To set the NumLock to on by default, enter 2. Hit the "OK" button to save your changes. Restart you computer. Your NumLock default changes will not take effect until your computer has been restarted.

What options have you tried ??

Number Lock on IBM Laptop Computers b> Laptop computers have the advantage being portable and self-contained, but among their drawbacks is a keyboard without a separate number keypad. While for most applications number keypads are unnecessary, they can be useful for data entry. Laptops sometimes provide a number keypad by giving certain keys double duty, allowing them to enter numbers rather than letters when a "Number Lock" setting is turned on. Number Lock, however, can get turned on accidentally, or enabled by an operating system by default, which can really mess up your typing. If typing "M" ends up displaying a "0" on your screen, Number Lock is probably the problem.

Try to locate the function key. On a T-series ThinkPad, it's in the lower left hand corner. It should be labeled "Fn," and the lettering may be blue, green or red instead of white. If your laptop lacks a "Fn" key, use the "Shift" key for Step 3 below instead. Locate the key labeled with "NmLk". On a T-series ThinkPad it shares a key with "ScrLk" which sits on the very top row between the "PrtSc" and "Pause" keys. On other IBM laptops, the "NmLk" key might share a key with "Delete." While holding down the "Fn" key or the "Shift" key, depending on your model, press the "NmLk" key. This should turn off Number Lock and restore your keyboard to its usual state. Number Lock on an IBM laptop is a "toggle" setting. You can turn Number Lock on by following the same steps.
also Examine your keyboard to ensure your "Number Lock" key is not activated. This activation is indicated by the key being lit up. If the key is activated, press it to deactivate the lock. The number lock key will deactivate an entire segment of your keyboard

Start, click Run, and type regedit to open the Windows registry editor. In the registry, open the below folders.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\
Control Panel\
Keyboard\
Within the keyboard folder, you should have a string value named "InitialKeyboardIndicators" with a value of 0, 1, or 2. Below is the explanation of each of these values.

0 = Num Lock is turned OFF after the logon.
1 = Disable Num Lock.
2 = Numlock is turned ON after the logon.

Left side of keyboard 123456789 is not working

Do you mean the right side of the keyboard is typing numbers instead of letters?
If so, you have enabled the NumLk which turns the RHS of the keyboard into the number pad.
Press the NumLk key near F11, F12 function key and the NumLk LED will switch off and return your RH keys back to letters.

What can I do to unlock my mouse

1. Locate the "function key" on your keyboard (F1 through F12) that has an icon of a touchpad. This is generally a rectangle with two smaller rectangles below it, representing the touchpad and its two buttons.
2. Press and hold the "FN" key, usually found in the lower left area of your keyboard.
3. Press the touchpad function key ("F#," with the "#" representing the number 1 through 12 that you located in step 1), and then release both keys. If this does not enable your touchpad, try holding the "FN" key down and pressing the "F#" key twice in a row.

My notebook has starting producing numbers instead of letters when I press certain keys - what is the problem?

Hi
you have enabled the numeric keyboard on your laptop
Try pressing the FN key (usually located at bottom left) and the F11 key.

If F11 key doesn't work you could try finding the F key with a mini keyboard icon on it.

Capslock needs to be on to get lower case and number keys dont work yet number lock will allow symbols to work but not then letter keys that have small numbers in left hand corners. Problem is on a Sony...

Please check if the accessibility option is enabled to convert your number pad to mouse keys, if you have a full numberpad.

Since you have not specified what it the model number of the computer, i am giving your common steps.

Also check restart the computer in safe mode (keep tapping the F8 key while you restart and choose the safe mode option using the up and down arrow key and hit enter) and check if the number keys work.

This is a Windows feature called "mouse keys", it can be disabled by using the shortcut left-alt+left-shift+num lock.

In Windows 7 mouse keys settings can be found by following Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Ease of Access Center\Set up Mouse Keys

I would like a manual for the latitude D610 keyboard to know how to use the symbol that are highlighted in bleu

In the lower left hand corner of your Dell Keyboard -- you will see a Blue Key labeled -- "Fn". This key allows you the use of ALL of the other blue labeled keys on your keyboard. You must press the FN key and the other "blue" key at the same time for them to work.

The keys on the right side of the keyboard with the blue numbers on them are controlled by the Numlock key and Fn key. The light at the top of the keyboard near the power button, with the number "9" inside a picture of a lock, will be lit if the Numlock is enabled.
You may need to press the Fn key to type numbers even if the Numlock is turned on. There is a setting in the BIOS called Enable Keypad and if you set it to By Numlock you will not have to hold down this key to type a number.

If you are still having trouble with these keys, please see the general keyboard troubleshooting guide

Number lock does not work

Hello dunebuggywhe,

You might have enabled the mouse keys that is why you cannot use your number key pad. Try going to the Control Panel >> Accessibility Options. Go to Mouse tab and see if the Use mouse keys is "checked" if it is, then UNCHECK the box and click OK.

Also, see if you can find the NumLock key beside the CTRL key on your keyboard or if there is a NUMLOCK key on the upper left corner of your keypad and try to pressing that to enable it.

If this does not help, please let me know.

I believe you have the number lock enabled, Hold down the Fn key...lower left hand of the keyboard and tap the scroll key (if you have a scroll key) If that does not work try Fn + F11.
