we normally get water in our basement when it rains real heavy, which is why we use it. The dial/switch auto checks humidity levels and turns unit off when dialed down... you explained it exactly like I explained to my wife as I was cleaning the unit. normally we have to empty unit almos twice a day when we use it. can't figure this one out.

Hello. I am here to help. Let me begin by saying that a dehumidifier only needs to be operated if the humidity in your home is too high. If the humidity is low, the humidifier will have to work really hard to try and remove water from it.

Here is an overview of how the dehumidifier is supposed to work:

When the unit runs, the circulating fan and compressor also run. The fan continually draws room air over the evaporator coils, which are cold, and then over the condenser coils, which are warm. Because the evaporator coils are cold, the moisture in the room collects on them--just as the outside of a glass of icy liquid "sweats" on a warm, humid day. When the moisture on the coils increases, it drips off of the coils into the collection container.

The air then flows over the warm condenser coils and out into the room. This process removes water from the air and, because of the heat from the fan motor and compressor motor, the exiting air is somewhat warmer, as well as dryer.

If your dehumidifier doesn't seem to run often but the humidity in the room is high, try adjusting the humidistat control on the dehumidifier to a dryer setting. If the dehumidifier seems to run constantly, but there's little or no water in the container, there may be a problem in the refrigeration system. Try cleaning the unit. If that doesn't work, you can't repair the refrigeration system yourself, you need a qualified appliance repair technician to do that.

Is it possible that the de humidifier has soaked up all the water in the room

I doubt that would be possible with a consumer grade dehumidifier even if you sealed off the room so that no more air could get in. In a normal house you constantly have more moisture coming in with the air.

I have an older NY apt. with radiator heat for winter. In summer, there is no A/C, but cold water runs thru pipes and blower fan "cools" the apt. (No idea what this system is called). It gets...

if anything a dehumidifier. But before that, sounds like the building has 1 heating system , and no zone control, for the building. What you really need to do in this case is to shut the water line off before it hits the radiator. If not then close the valve on the radiator, it should look like a basic outdoors spicket knob. But if all else fails, get a dehumidifier.

Hi! is it a humidifier or dehumidifier? if you want to remove mold you need a dehumidifier to absorb the moisture on the air. provided that the unit is capable of absorbing the moisture on your basement floor area. because a typical dehumidifier can only accommodate a 21 square meters floor area.

Dehumidifier - hot compressor / coils not cold

If the compressor's running and it's getting hot and the coil isn't getting cold, then you are probably low on refrigerant or your txv or metering device isn't working.
