Does anyone know what brand is good? Is Rheem construction grade, or a good one? Is Lennox the best?

Unless your filter is very dirty you have a unit low on Freon. Which means you have a small leak.

Has the cooling effectiveness reduced? If so, it might be loss of freon gas. If not just clean the filter and insulate the tube entering the house with glass wool or rock wool and cover it with aluminum sheet molded on the insulation and the ends held fast by small screws..........sodeep

Clean the filter. remove as much of the muck from the evaporator coils as possible. If the filter is messy replace it.

If the tube you are referring to is the larger of the two, it may be that one of these conditions exist.
Inadequate airflow over the indoor coil due to:
Plugged air filter
Plugged indoor coil
Blower not running to speed
Blocked return air or blockage in the ducts
Blower wheel fouled with debris
In some cases damaged valves in the compressor will cause the tube to ice up.

Our airconditioner is not pushing cold air but it is running....the vents have little air coming o ut but not a lot and the house is not cooling.

Check the filters . It sounds as though its iced up. had the unit been running for a long period of time? If so you might see ice on the indoor coil . If so shut down the cooling leaving the fan on to help deice the unit . If it ices up again then you may have a fan that is running slow or a coil that is plugged with lint due to inproper filter service .. check the coil for ice and let me know.. Jon

High efficiency outside air conditioner does not cool house, seems to for a while but stops. The pipes at the air conditioner are coated with ice so seems to produce cold but does not blow that through the...

Unfortunately, the ice coating isn't normal, in fact, it is an indication that your unit is low on freon or a blockage. But could also mean a few other things.

But about the only thing you can do yourself is make sure that the fan is turning or not.

Rudd air conditioner isn't cooling, blowing ,but isn't cooling my house because air is not cold

Hello, first check if the outside unit is running, if it is then check filter to make sure it is clean and that the blower wheel is clean and not dirty. If the unit is clean then most likely you have a low refrigerant charge due to a leak and will need a hvac tech to come out and fix the leak.

Model ck42-1a compressor won't come on. I replaced the intake filter about a month ago. It was a pleated filter and was real caked when I replaced this month. Can that cause the compressor to go out? I...

The fact the filter was very dirty and the door partly open allowing non filtered air to enter the system leads me to a possible dirty evaporative coil on the furnace. That can cause poor airflow and iced up coil reducing airflow even more. In the long run can damage the compressor to the point of failure.

Not cooling house it stay on unless you turn the thermostat to 88 degrees

if the the outdoor unit is running and the larger of the two copper lines going into the unit from the house is not cold you are probably low on freon. if the line is iced up then you need to shut if off for 8 hrs and try again, make sure the filter is clean recheck the large copper tube again if its not cold your probably low on freon. if its not running at all outside check your breakers. there are a number of diffrent things that may be wrong and you probaly need a service company to look at it.

Air conditioner fan runs outside but won 't blow cold air in house. It's 78 in there. The unit is only 3 years old.

is any air coming out? check the fan. then the evaporator coils in the furnace plenum. see if the condensation drain is plugged. see if the coils are iced up. is the thin tubing very warm? if not, you may be low on refrigerant.

The thermostat is set at 73... the air conditioner is running and cold air is blowing but the house is currently 82 degrees. I've checked the unit outside and there is no icing. I don't know what to do.

check to see supply air should be around 58F. 20* difference form supply air to return air if 58F my guess unit under sized air filter clean? when was the last time you had the unit tuned up?

Central Air not cooling properly

This tubbing carries the refrigerant. The small line is flowing to their inside air handler. If the line is hot it is an indication that the outside unit is not able to release the heat. The most common reason is that the coil (looks like a car radiator) is dirty or plugged. This can be cleaned with a brush or sometimes a garden hose. They do make acid type cleaners for doing this, but the use of the acids are restricted in some areas.

By the way the other black pipe should have a larger copper line behind the black insulation. That line should be cold and sweaty like a nice glass of ice tea:)
