Question about Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500 GB SATA Hard Drive

1 Answer

Twin drives in an external HDD, and it quit, but I can hear them working. The fan also quit too.

I have twin Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 Hard Drives in an external harddrive. (LaCie) At first it would click in and out of the main computer, you know recognized, not recognized, and the drive icon on mycomputer would appear and disappear. Finally it just stopped appearing. I can't believe BOTH drives died simultaneously. I opened the enclosure, turned it on, and I get the main blue light, but also a red one. Putting a stethscope to them, I can hear them, but the speed up, and then slow down over and over. And what does that red light mean?

Not sure about the coloured light, but spinning up and the cycling off is generally a problem with either the lacie enclosures circuit board or with the circuit boards on the drive.

Have you tried moving one of the drives into a new enclosure?

If not please do and while you have the drive out, look over the circuit board on the drive closely for brown areas or burnt out components.

Report back here when you've dome that and let me know how you made out, if not successful, please include the make, model, part number(PN) batch, date, location codes on the drive and I will see what else we can try for you.

You do not need a driver, I suspect the Seagate hard drive may be faulty.
Try conncting your hard drive as a Slave drive in your computer, if the BIOS does not detect the hard drive then the hard drive is faulty.

If your running XP , go to control panal , Admin tools>Computer Management >Storage > Disk Management . Look for it there . If its there see if it says what file system . If none format it . If it isnt there then chack the jumper on the hard drive it self . It should be set to master or cable select .

bricked hard drive? Would folling this lead to a full hard drive format or just unbricking a drive like people sat it does?? Also any other ways that might help would be great to know, heres what i'm talking about! "Fixing The Drive NOTE: Commands for you to type are in red boldface. Pay attention to upper & lower case - it is important. Turn on power to the RS232-to-TTL adapter and the hard drive. After a few seconds, Press CTRL+z. You should then see a prompt like this: F3 T> If not, swap TX & RX wires. Access Level 2 (type /2): F3 T>/2 (enter) F3 2> Then spin down the (disconnected) motor: F3 2>Z (enter) Spin Down Complete Elapsed Time 0.147 msecs F3 2> Very carefully, remove the cardstock that you placed between the PCB and the drive head contacts. Carefully replace and tighten the 3 loose screws. I suggest using a small piece of masking tape to help you hold the screws while you put them back in place. Then start the motor: F3 2>U (enter) Spin Up Complete Elapsed Time 7.093 secs F3 2> Next go to Level 1 (type /1): F3 2>/1 (enter) And do a S.M.A.R.T. erase (create S.M.A.R.T. sector): F3 1>N1 (enter) Cycle power to the drive, then do partition regeneration: F3 T>m0,2,2,0,0,0,0,22 (enter) After 15-30 seconds, you should see something like: Max Wr Retries = 00, Max Rd Retries = 00, Max ECC T-Level = 14, Max Certify Rewrite Retries = 00C8 User Partition Format 10% complete, Zone 00, Pass 00, LBA 00004339, ErrCode 00000080, Elapsed Time 0 mins 05 secs User Partition Format Successful - Elapsed Time 0 mins 05 secs Do not turn off drive until you see this message. Once seen, drive can be turned off. Power down everything, place drive back into your computer, and confirm that it's working." Thanks.
