Heater coil can be checked with a continuity meter, just be sure to unplug the unit first. Before you do anything, locate the defrost timer which is under the control panel in the fridge at the top in the back. There is a little white plastic plug cover a small hole, remove that and you will see the manual advance device. You can only turn it one way due to its design, so using a flat bladed screwdriver that fits the device turn it slowly until you hear a click. then listen in the freezer for sizzling noises as the heater warms up. If you hear the noise you will need to replace the defrost timer, part is available on line. If it doesn't activate the timer then check the continuity on the heater element and the defrost thermostat. (You will have to cut the wires on the thermostat to accomplish this) and check it for continuity. The thermostat needs to be frozen to read properly otherwise it will appear to be open so leave it in a freezer for a bit then check it out. all the parts are available online, just google for refrigerator parts and look for your model.

Top freezer works but main frig does not

The way a refrigerator / freezer works is a single cooling coil in the freezer controlled with a thermostat. There is a fan that blows cold air down into the refrigerator section. There is another control that is just a vent control that changes the size of the opening for air flow. if the fan fails you don't get good cooling in the refrigerator section or if the defrost is not working correctly ice will build up and also stop the flow of air to the refrigerator. You should be able to hear the fan working inside the freezer. Replacing a fan motor is much simpler than troubleshooting an icing problem. There are several components that can cause defrost to not work. Bad temp cutoff switch, defrost timer or heater element could be causing that problem. With the unit unplugged and heater element disconnected you can use an ohm meter to measure resistance of the heater, should measure some resistance. Same with cutoff you should measure resistance when cold and none when above cutoff temp. Room temp is well above cutoff and use ice water to see if it closes.

Fridge ED22RQXXWOO freezer side working fridge side not cooling

Hi JB,

Is there frost in the freezer section at or around the bottom? If so a defrost problem might be the issue.
Here is a test for the air flow issue. At the air inlet of the fridge section, put your hand up there, is there air flow with the freezer door closed? With the freezer door open is the air flow better or increased?
If air flow is increased, chances are the you have an air flow restriction between both chambers and you will need to locate the obstruction.
So with this information this should lead you to a conclusion that is ice is on the evaporator you have a defrost issue, if you have no ice, than look for air flow issue.

Good Luck.

Frigidaire Gallery Warm Refrigerator Cold Freezer

Generally the thermostat that turns on and off the compressor is in the freezer and so is the coils. The control knob that is in the refrigerator section is just to adjust the air flow between the two sections. If the air flow is blocked you don't get cooling in the refrigerator section. This could be a bad fan motor not creating circulation, ice blockage because the defrost cycle is not melting away ice accumulation. If it's defrost problems it could be timer, defrost thermostat, or heater element.

Refrigerator stopped cooling. As close as I can tell the fan in the freezer part was frosted up for a length of time and has possibly ruined the fridges cooling fan? Kenmore model 106 freezer on top.

If the fan in the freezer stops, then coll air from freezer will not pass from freezer section to fridge section. In that case, the freezer section will get over frosted but fridge section will not get cold, because cool air will not pass from freezer to fridge. The fan is there for two things, 1) for cooling the heating evaporator coil and 2) For flowing the cool air from freezer to fridge.---------- If the frost is getting collected and fan is getting stuck up in frost, then this is the problem. The defrost cycle is not running, the cooling cycle is running.---------------
This problem is called defrost problem.-------------

So first thing you try is , perform, manual defrost reset procedure.---------

The manual defrost reset procedure is as follows : ----
First unplug the unit from main power outlet. Then empty whole unit completely. Then keep both the doors open. Wait for 24 hours. All the ice collected on the coils and in the freezer section will get melted. Clean the water from the sections. Then Connect the power cord of the unit to main power outlet after 24 hours/.Then set the temperature to normal in both fridge and freezer section. Then check,if same frost is getting collected, then its defrost problem,. If it's again building up ice that means the unit is not defrosting. It's starting the cooling procedure, and then while defrosting, it's not working. The defrost assembly consists of three main parts. The defrost thermostat, the defrost heater and defrost board. Any of the one is not functioning. When thermostat sense the maximum cooling, it triggers the defrost heater to start heating and this defrosts the ice collected on the coils and the system works. Both thermostat and heater are controlled by defrost board. First the thermostat and defrost heater to be checked, if both check ok by meter and visually, then its defrost board causing the problem. You can get required parts from from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site. --------- This should help.Thanks.Helpmech.

I have an amana br22 the botom freezer gets an ice block on the radiator coils then air flow slows down to top section i have to hot air gun the freezer to get the air to start moving

The ice block is due to a defrost circuit failure. Typical problems are due to the defrost heater, defrost timer if used on this model and defrost thermostat. Since you are using a heat gun to melt the ice, check the the defrost heater with a meter to determine whether it needs to be replaced.

Refrigerator side not cooling, but feezer is still freezing

DEFROST HEATERS IN THE FREEZER. IF THERE IS FROST ON THE BACK WALL INSIDE THE LOWER AREA OF THE FREEZER SECTION. YOU THEN HAVE A DEFROST PROBLEM. THE HEATER IS THE MOST COMMON. REMOVE THAT PANEL AND DEFROST WITH HAIR DRYER. THIS FROST IS BLOCKING THE AIR FLOW TO THE REF. SIDE. AFTER THIS IT WILL WORK FOR 10-21 DAYS WITH OUT REPLACING THE DEFROST HEATER. 95 PERCENT CHANCE. JUST REPLACE THE HEATER SOON AFTER DEFROSTING SO YOU DONOT HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN.

Freezer works great, but refrigeration section stopped working

Check the door seals on fridge and freezer to make sure there are NO leaks.
Try manually adjusting air flap that controls air from freezer to fridge, the flap may be frozen or the actuator that controls the flap may be faulty.

Hot point side by side excess frost????

There's probably a bad defrost timer(located where the cold control is or behind the bottom front grill in the refrigerator. You can turn it until clicks and the compresor stops and if is ablock of ice in the frezer coil you heard the defrost water steaming when it hits the defrost heaters ,if not the heaters are bad or the defrost terminator is bad.You can check the heaters for continuity if they're ok the defrost terminator is bad ,but most of the caes the problem is with the timer.

Kenmore elite 596 73503201 no cooling in top compartment

if the freezer is getting cold the problem is due to the cold air from the freezer not getting into the refrigerator. There are several things that can cause this problem. The coils in the freezer icing up and not defrosting properly is one of the things that can cause the refrigerator not to get cold enough. Another problem is the fan that blows the cold air from the freezer compartment into the refrigerator, not working. When the compressor is running open the refrigerator's door and push the switch that makes the light go out. You should hear the fan blowing the cold air from the freezer into the refrigerator, when this switch is pushed in. If the fan is working then you will need to find what is blocking the air flow. Iced up coils are a common problem. The icing problem can be due to a defective defrost timer or something defective in the defrost circuit. Click here for more information. Check for these problems and let me know what you have found.

Defrost system problem. Could be in heaters, defrost thermostat, or defrost timing circuit. Freezing in vegetable section is due to air back flow related to frozen evaporator coil in freezer compartment.
Colder air settles and warmer air raises.

Ice maker problem is separate. Bar up engages micro switch that is supposed to shut it off. Bad micro-switch?
