Kenmore 90 series dryer makes noise and does not want to turn. I can make it spin by hand holding the door switch in, grab it and spin it, and get it to spin again. It keeps doing the same thing when it stops though. Sometimes it will just make the noise, and then shut off. I have to wait for it to reset, or something, and then I can try again.

Thanks for your response. I appreciate it. Too bad it was the motor. :-( Probably cheaper to buy another dryer than to pay someone to come out and fix it right?

I was looking and new gas dryers are really expensive. I might be better off having the motor changed out......?

I live in Dallas so, it's probably $400 around here. I'll see what I can find out. Thanks!

Your motor is worn out. Bearings worn and not enough power to start it. Motor is not repairable it must be replaced or new dryer. Sorry

New Dryer is probably the wisest way to go.

I would call around and get some prices then decide.... I usually charge around $180-$200 to change a motor but I am in a small town and that is probably low on the range of what you might be charged.

From your description, the dryer belt could be in need of replacement. The burning smell could come from the motor pulley spinning and trying get a grip to turn the drum.

My dryer makes a buzzing noise when i try to turn it on, but it won't turn on at all. What could the issue be?

The motors centrifugal switch may be stuck. Try having someone start it while pressing in the door switch while you rotate the drum with your hand by grabbing one of the drum vanes. I don't know which direction your drum rotates. Try both. This may start the drum turning on its own and resetting the switch.

Have a Kenmore 90 series gas dryer. When I press the button to turn it on, it makes a noise but won't start

Assume the buzzing quit when you release the start button. Open the dryer door and slowly rotate the dryer drum in a counterclockwise (CCW) direction. Rotate the drum 2-3 revolutions and then shut the door and see if it will start. If it continues to just hum and not start could indicate a voltage issue, motor issue or a friction issue. Open the door again and locate the door switch plunger in the upper or lower corner on the hinge side of the drum opening. Hold the plunger in while someone begins rotating the drum counterclockwise. While turning the drum counter clockwise and holding the door switch plunger inwards press the start button. If it starts, there is likely a friction problem or motor problem. Check the blower fan and motor for any obstructions.

Kenmore 90 Series, 10 years old; Dryer was making funny noise and stopped in the middle of a cycle. There was a burnt smell when it stopped. Cannot turn drum manually either. What are possibilities?

OF COURSE SOMETHING BURNT INSIDE THE SYSTEM. YOUR MOTOR MIGHT BE BURNT. 90 SERIES, YOU MUST HAVE THE LINT FILTER ON TOP CORRECT? TAKE FILTER OUT, UNSCREWS THE TWO SCREWS, PULL TOP PANEL TOWARDS YOU AND LIFT UP. DISCONNECT LID SWITCH CONNECTOR, UNSCREW TWO SCREWS HOLDING FRONT PANEL ON, REMOVE FRONT PANEL, TAKE DRUM OUT AND CHECK THE UNIT. GOOD LUCK

Kenmore Series 90, just buzzes when you hit the start button even though the cycle dial is in the center. What's broke or what can I test?

It sounds like a defective motor. You may be able to hand start to confirm this. You will need another person for this. With cycle selected and door open, hold in door switch lever. Have second person press start button. While button is pressed, give the drum a spin by hand and see if it starts up. If it does you may be able to dry a load or two. The motor will need replacement.
