Question about Dishwashers

2 Answers

I have a Bosch SHY66 dishwasher. The detergent cup will not open. The rinse injector stoped working a long time ago. I removed the outer door and the mechanism for the detergent cup and rinse injector is exposed. I see a clear fluid inside. How can I determine if the detergent cup mechanism has failed or if it is a failure of the control signal? How can I remove the detergent cup assembly? I am willing to buy the service manual if you now where to find it. Thank you, Bruce O'Reilly

The link does not take me to anything helpful. It simply opens RepairClinic''s parts page for this dishwasher.

I solved this problem by buying a downloadable service manual on Ebay. There are no timer arms on this detergent cup assembly. It is removed by carefully bending the metal retaining tabs on the dishwasher door and then pushing the assembly through the door into the dishwasher. A single wax motor activates both the detergent cup door and the rinse injector. The clear fluid inside the assembly was apparently water which drained out after a while. The Bosch service manual states that it is not possible to test the wax motor via resistance measurements.

Not really. I feel I wasted my $15.

Bosch Detergent Dispenser
It's not that bad to change. Remove door panel, remove two timer actuator arms (be careful of springs), pry down tabs on top and sides and push it out. Of course remove upper basket so there's room to push it out and disc leads. Bend tabs back before inserting new one. If you have never done this before make sure stud on timer is lined up with slot on panel when putting it back on.

My soap dispenser will not open: Many dishwashers ( but not all ) use a BI-metal strip that heats up once power is applied to it. The BI-metal strip bends and allows the soap door spring to open up the dispenser. This bi-metal strip is not given full 120 volts power, the timer "shunts" the power through either the heating element ( most common ) or the motor and this gives the bi-metal strip lower than full power to work and open. Most often the bi-metal strip has lost it's ability to bend properly and needs to be replaced. Older GE dishwashers used an mechanical arm driven by the timer to open the dispenser = no electrical bi-metals. Newer ( plastic liner ) Maytag dishwashers and many newer Whirlpool and Frigidaire dishwashers use a wax motor to open the soap dispenser, this wax motor does receive 120 volts to work. The plunger inside the wax motor slowly moves and pushes the plunger and door open. This is a what a wax motor looks like.
dishwasher soap door will not stay closed: ( Round style dispenser ) You should remove power and check the spring and plastic tab under the timer, often the plastic tab breaks and the soap door will not stay closed. You can try to install a small screw where the tab use to be to re-hook the spring. If that is ok, you will have to check the rest of the dispenser arms, door cover and handle. The spring on the round dispenser should look like this. #1 hooks on a groove cut into the dispenser arm, #2 hooks onto a tab built onto the inner door panel.

Dishwasher suds up and leaks during wash

Suds in a dishwasher usually come from using too much soap or the wrong kind. Soap can build up over times causing problems. First start a cycle.Do not add detergent or any dishes. When it starts washing, pour a cup of vegetable oil directly into the tub. This will cut the existing soap suds. You may need to try this a couple time before the dishwasher will drain. After all suds have been removed, load you dishwasher and start a cycle filling the detergent cup up half way. If it goes through the cycle with no problems, you should be all set. Still have the problem? A rinse aid dispenser that dispenses too much rinse aid will also cause the dishwasher to suds up. You can remove the dispenser from the door, flush it out and reinstall. Make sure you turn the circuit breaker off before taking the door apart. After rinsing it out, do not add rinse aid. Try the dishwasher and see if the problem goes away. I've seen people accidentally put liquid dish detergent in dispensers too. A dishwasher that has suds is apt to leak. Fix your suds issue and you most likely will fix you leak

Detergent dispenser problem

Is it new? Even if it was or wasn't, I strongly feel that you probably didn't set something properly. Read the manual it came with, particularly the troubleshooting section. Not a big problem. Let me know how it goes. :)

Door of detergent holder on Bosch dishwasher won't shut. It just pops open. Is there an easy fix?

Proceed with this step:
Timer
check the timer, and the linkage see it is defective.
Bi-metal switch or wax motor
test the swithc or the motor for defective.
Detergent cup, itself
can be clogged, for to open.

sincerely. God bless you.

My detergent dispenser door does not open. It is NOT cloggy inside. Does anyone know if there is a pre-rinse before main-cleaning? I.e if I can just put the detergent into the machine directly? Thanks

Hello. I have a GE Potscrubber 600 dishwasher. The soap dispenser will not close. This seems to be a common problem. Any help would be great, thank you.

Main detergent cup won't close on GE Potscrubber 700 GSD700.A workaround is to add the additional detergent with rinse aid 18 minutes intothe wash cycle. To repair, switch off power through circuit breaker. Set timerknob to 12 o'clock. If the detergent cup lever spring opens the cup after it isclosed, remove screws on panel that holds detergent cup and remove the panel upand out of door. Remove timer cover by moving it right and pulling up to exposetimer, see photo 1. _1909.jpg If a spring is loose, it can be reattached as follows.Remove two screws that hold timer, then remove timer. Do not remove timer knobfrom front of GSD700 because knob is designed for removal from rear of panel, after the timer is out. If spring attachment point broke off, reinforce it withepoxy (JBKwik), see gray cone upper right of center in photo 2. _1910.jpg After epoxy cures, drill and tap a hole for a metric 3 - 0.5mm-8mm screw (4-40 may also work). Install spring between new screw anddispenser linkage and tighten screw, see photo 3. _1911.jpg Install timer, jiggle knob so it engages timer and securetimer with two screws. Pull dispenser lever down to make sure it moves andsprings back. Replace round switch and cover. Install white cover with leverextended through it. Install cover screws, close soap door, and rotate timer, soap door should open after about 90 degrees of rotation followed by rinse aidactuation.

It sounds like it may be stuck between cycle steps.(this sometimes happens if the washer is open during a cycle)Try and run it through one full wash cycle as it is.Then check to see if the soap door will close. If not,the lack may be broken

Dawn detergent in rinse aid dispensor

I did the same. I have run the washer several times but with the rinse aid cup open. Then flushed it by adding water and using a turkey baster to **** the water out. Then used a small amount of liquid fabric softner to reduce the suds. Then flushed it several more times with clear water. The turkey baster will fit into the cup better if you can remove the inside cup cover that dials the amount of dispensing (at least in my brand of dishwasher). I also forced paper towels into the cup opening several times to sop up as much liquid as possible until the indicater light for rinse aid showed empty.  This took some time but by the end of the day, the suds diminished.  Note: I no longer keep Dawn under the sink cabinet where the rinse aid is kept!
