Question about Westell Wirespeed LiteLine 6110 Modem
Hello there. This is a problem that I've been having for almost a month now. I have a Westell 6100 gateway router and as you know, it only has 1 ethernet port. I have a Netgear rangemax wireless router for the sole purpose of my laptop. Here's my problem: I want to play xbox Live, and although it says I'm ''connected'' when I run the test while connected to my router, I can't play any games because I will get either ''the game has been canceled'' or something like that. When I connect the xbox cord directly into my westell router, I have no problems with gaming. What can I do to solve this problem? Should I call my isp and get a new modem/router with multiple ports so I can plug my xbox cord? Will that help? Also, I did the port forwarding stuff on my router too and it didn't help. I also found out about having my modem in bridge mode, but I figure another modem from my isp with extra ports would be easier. Unless any of you guys can give me another suggestion. I would really appreciate it. Thanks!
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
Best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of.(from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones)
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

well depends on if you want to hookup wirelessly with one or not. If the modem has a USB connection as well as ethernet, then you can hook up 1 computer to usb and 1 to ethernet with no problems. If you do want a wireless hookup then yes, you need a wireless router. I would just go with a router because of the convenience of being able to go wireless if you decide to. I would suggest a Linksys WRT-54GL with a 3rd party firmware (DD,-WRT, Tomato, etc.) Hope this helps.

SOURCE: westell 6100 problems
we had the same issue. Here is how we fixed it. I had the xbox 360 plugged directly into the westell 6100 modem via ethernet cable. the mtu test failed everytime. I was extremely frustrated and called microsoft and verizon (dsl) about 10 times each and they kept giving me the wrong solution. (get a new modem, get a new server, pay us money and we'll figure it out etc...) Here is what a man at microsoft told me to do and finally it worked. Power cycle your equipment (unplug modem and xbox 360 for 30 sec.) then, plug in modem first and wait until all lights are back on. Then plug in xbox and run test. In my case mtu failed again. I was then instructed to go to my dashboard and restore xbox to factory default which I did and rerun the test. This time everything FINALLY passed. We were in business. I then decided to try connecting through my airport extreme router. I power cycled again starting with the airport then the modem then the xbox and ran the test and unbelievable as it sounds it all passed and my son is now sitting happily on the couch playing a game online with his xbox 360. This took away days of my life to get this simple thing done. I was given codes to change and change back on the computer, phone calls to everyone and the solution was so simple when you finally reach a knowledgeable person. Hope this will help save someone else the time I spent!

Since the Linksys router and Westell 6100 have the same ip address which is 192.168.1.1, then they will have a conflict.
Please note: before doing the steps below, make sure you know your Verizon settings. Such as username and password.
Reset the westell 6100 (push the reset button for 30 seconds) to remove it from bridge mode. Directly connect the laptop to the Westell to access the setup page using 192.168.1.1. Set it back on how it was working before you connect the linksys router. For PPPoE, make sure Verizon username and password is correct. For DHCP, make sure that it is obtaining a WAN ip address from Verizon. Check if internet is working, if yes, then connect the Linksys router, access the setup page using a browser (http://192.168.1.1).
Under the setup page, change the LAN ip address of your Linksys to 192.168.2.1. Make sure that the WAN/Internet connection type is Obtain IP address automatically or DHCP.
Click save and it will prompt "page cannot be displayed" since the ip address changed.
Turn off the modem, router, laptop and ps3. Then turn on the westell first, wait for the DSL light to become solid, then turn on the linksys, and then the laptop and ps3.
The laptop and PS3 will now obtain the new ip address of the linksys which is 192.168.2.100 - 254.
