Hi - Thanks leecom72 for your post

So this is the one of the weirdest situations that I have encountered.

Just to refresh, I have an ACER Aspire One with Windows XP which I have now just about 7 weeks.

I have purchased 4 of these and (3 for gifts and 2 of the gift ones had issues.

(one had a sort of "minor" issue of the bios password not recognizing as it had to be capitals only - solved, eventually but only throught forums.).

(Other had to be replaced as it would only boot after about 10 minutes - out of box.- solved by replacement)

Now to mine - situation interesting
Worked fine then developed a video issue which I am sure is a hardware issue but.

I called Acer Support and the young lady I spoke to was very pleaseant but very little help. She advised me to boot up (of course) and then see if issue repeated. She had (forgive me, I know how hard Tech Support is but..) very limited knowledge of the platform and basically asked to do the basic "monkey button" knd of troubleshooting. (Yes it boots, yes it does what I just explained, why did you make me see if I can go into safe mode when I told you it made no diffrence, etc.) Also the description that was given for my problem made absolutly no sense.

    So Just to follow up.
    Problem
Computer starts up normally, and boots successfully into Windows XP.

After 2- 3 minutes, sometimes a little longer the screen starts to dissipate by about "eighths". By that I mean the bottom of the screen starts to go a greyish blue for about an eighth of the screen, then gradually continues in this fashion until the video display is entirely blueish grey. Also seems to run "hot" at the bottom where the rear vents are. - Could be a cooling fan issue.

For the rest of the day the situation is the same. If I come back after say 24 hours, this process repeats itself (it boots, works OK then dissipates)

    Troubleshooting Steps

    Letting it cool down
Works OK for about 15 minutes after sitting idle (unpowered) for 48 hours. then same issue.

    Plugging an external monitor
Plugged an external Phillips monitor and it boots into safe mode OK and is visible on the external after the Laptop Screen goes grey-blue.
So I can use and external monitor in safe mode.

When using full Windows mode the external monitor does not show anything but "video connection not available".

Have tried a Windows restore to previous "good" version, no difference.

Have tried leecom72's suggestion and has not had an effect.

Whe I first looked this up I came across someone with an almost identical situation but unfortunatly thought I had logged the site which I did not.

Just curious as well as there seem to be several display and video issues that I have seen on the net, if anyone would care to comment on their situation.

I am not anti-Acer, just a little frustrated

    Thank you

Hi there.
This could be 1 of 2 problems, lets start with the first.
#1 Bad display drivers

Boot the laptop into safe ( i am assuming you know how to do this by your post ) on the computer icon, right click and select manage, a new window will pop up and then select device manager, the list will populate with hardware that installed on the PC, look down the list for display adapters and click on the + sign on the left hand side to open the tree, then right click on the display adapter and select uninstall. Now restart the laptop and let it boot up as normal, if the display drivers were bad it will boot with the screen resolution as large, once you log in it should auto detect the display and install the drivers (you may have give it permission) if this works then that was the problem.

#2 Faulty graphics card.

Take advantage of the manufacturers warranty and send it in for repair as there will be nothing you can do about this kind of hardware failure.

Please post back with the results and more help if needed, good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

I have been working with three of the aspire ones and have not run into display issues. I would agree that it sounds like a hardware issue, either with the cooling unit or more likely with the display driver.

As for the external monitor, it is quite possible that the screen resolution is not matching between the two monitors when not in safe mode. In particular, the aspire one uses a funny 1024x600 which probably does not match the aspect resolution of most monitors.

My screen gets white before it starts and some time in the middle only yhe screen gets shut blank n i have to turn of directly using had been using my laptop for two years it now few days ago problem...

It might be due to faulty display driver, in this case you might need to reinstall display driver, but before that you can try one step-

1. Click on start.
2. Click on run.
3. Type msconfig.
4. Select Startup.
5. Uncheck all start up items.
6. Cick on Apply and then OK and cick on restart.

Hope this would fix the issue.

the vga board has failed, its a very common problem in acer laptops, you can get a replacement part from www.acerparts.com im not sure if they ship into us but for europe thats where I get my parts.
my acers vga failed two times, ones within warranty and 12months after that, I have to say that acer products are really bad quality, I'm not sure about the latest models but from what I've seen the vga chipsets have real issues with the motherboards and keep failing over and over again.

I have not looked inside your model but the vga is either integrated into the motherboard = that means the repair will cost the whole motherboard, better to buy a new one.

if your model has a removeable vga like mine does, then you can consider changeing it to a new one. contact acer parts.

One of the covers in the bottom is the memory, one is network and last one I don't remember.
here are the contact details if your acer is out of warranty
http://www.acerparts.com/contact_us.php

The parts for your model are at http://www.acerparts.com/index.php?cPath=561_562_1064

you will have to contact acer parts directly, it may be that the vga is build into the motherboard or then the vga parts are not listed.

Hope this may help;
