Question about Ace Hardware InSinkErator Badger 5, 1/2 HP Garbage Disposal

2 Answers

Metal nail fell into the garbage disposal.

A small metal nail fell into the insinkerator, and makes a loud noise when I turn it on. I looked down the drain with a flashlight, I cannot see the nail. I turned the allen wrench on the bottom of the unit, I hear a scratchy sound. Seems like the nail is stuck somewhere underneath the mechanism. Can I fix this problem myself?

Just above the motor par of your incinerator there should be 3 or 4 small bolts or srews that holds the main motor onto the waste chute TURN OFF THE POWER. Remove these bolts to seperate the motor and you should be able to remove the nail. Please, please make sure the power is off.

After turning blades manually and pressing reset. Noise was still pretty bad. Tried lubrication with dishwashing liquid - lessened noise. Repeat. Checked with flashlight, still nothing visible caught in blades. Put cut up lemon into disposal - ground ok and noise lessening. Seems better.

Nail fell into insinkerator, doesn't turn, jambed. can I get this out

Use the allen wrench that came with the disposer or get a new one that will fit in the center hole on the bottom of the disposer. Using that tool you turn it back and forth until the nail loosens enough to remove it.

It will work but it sounds like metal is grinding in it.

Use vacuum cleaner to see if something is loose.
Otherwise, a noisy disposal that works is functional and not dangerous... but annoying.
Life of disposal is probably shortened since the bearing seal could have failed letting water in, and bearings could be rusted.
Replace disposal if noise bother you.

Garbage disposal makes loud noise, nothing stuck, blades turn freely

Bearings in the motor are worn enough to allow the grinder plate to rub against the side of the chamber.

When disposal is turned on there is a loud metal clanking noise

You must have a foreign object in the disposal. Turn off power, get a flashlight and look inside. Use pliers or tongs, NOT YOUR HAND to remove object(s)

My Ace 2000 is very loud, like their is a fork in

You are exactly right. Knife, spoon, fork , whatever. that metal on metal sound is produced in the flail chamber.

Get a flashlight and have a look inside.

Needle nose pliers can be handy for extraction.

I have an in-sink-erator model 1-81 which is leaking from the power cord attachment area and from a small rectangular metal piece mounted on the bottom of the unit. Replace or repair and is this possible?

The unit's seals have failed. The metal piece covers the box where the cord is wired to the motor, meaning the motor above it is already soaked with nasty water. It's definitely your best value replace the disposer. If you get another insinkerator or one made by insinkerator (whirlpool, kenmore, etc) you can hook up the new one in three easy steps.

Very loud

Take a magnet on a rod, with electrical tape wrap on it(just one wrap) and try to see if a small spoon or something fell in to it. My wedding ring fell in to mine, this is how I got it out, talk about chewed up. Please ensure to unplug it before do this!!

InSinkErator Badger 5hp NOISY

If it were me I would remove the disposal, turn it upside down and see what comes out. Would I run it with something in it making a lot of noise? Absolutely not. If something is loose in it, it could harm the disposal.
