Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 for PC
Many picture folders disappeared from my computer after doing some norton updates. Maybe coincidental but how do pictures just vanish. I realized this when I got a message that the folder I was using for a screen saver was empty. When checking other folders I realized I was missing many folders.
See this link, to begin with.
The pictures don't really vanish, but the links that identify the file locations can be corrupted and essentially they are disconnected from their triggers. Norton updates shouldn't cause this, but if it happened right after doing an update, you could use system restore to choose a restore point before you loaded the update and revert your system back to that time. That might recreate the links you lost, and essentially recover your files. You can always apply the update again once you've backed up your documents. For more on system restore click here.
If that doesn't work, you'll have to try a program such as activedelete or search the net for data recovery software or freeware. See here.
This symptom can also be the result of malware installed on your computer. If this is a possibility, I recommend you follow the protocols outlined in this link to check for malware your AV may have missed.
It may be time to do some general maintenance once you recover the missing folders. Do a disk cleanup and defrag your hard drive, clean out the temp files, etc. See this link. and consider running chkdsk on your system to check for file corruption. see here.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
