Hard starting Stihl 024 chainsaw

I had my chainsaw serviced earlier this winter because I had some trees I had to clean up do to snow damage. Once that job was done I put the saw away and I haven't tried to start it for at least four months. Admittedly there was some gas left in the tank but I did replace the sparkplug this last weekend. Since it has probably an hour or less of operation since it was serviced the only thing I can think of is varnishing of the fuel. Short of getting it serviced again (carb cleanout & fuel filter) is there anything I can do to get it going. From now on I think I'll use fuel stabilizer but I have much older Stihl gas powered equipment that doesn't give me anywhere near the fits that the chainsaw does.

The engine doesn't want to start at all. My brother suggested pulling out the sparkplug and reinserting it back into the electrode so I could check if I was getting spark. With the way the plastic case is constructed I couldn't really see in their. The question regarding the E85 fuel is spot on I think because I get the fuel at the same station I buy fuel for the car. I did see that ethanol is causing some problems with car engines.

Did you try start it with the same fuel in the tank that was sitting there for 4 months? If so, there is a good chance your chainsaw is now trying to run on water! Ethanol attracts water like crazy, even after just two weeks so if it was sitting there for 4 months, there is going to be a lot of water in that fuel and probably separated and sitting on the bottom of the tank. Discard it and use only non-ethanol based fuel if it is available.

What type of fuel was in the tank? Did it have ethanol content?

If it's not getting spark with a new plug, then it may be the module ignition (coil). But you really need to get in a dark area and try to see if it's getting spark. If it is getting spark let me know, I should still be able to help you.

-check and see if the air filter is clean.
-check if you have your intake selected for summer or winter, you will find that on your air intake there will be a tab insert that has a sun or snow flake insure that this is in the proper spot.
these two items list are usually the cause of what you described.
