Thank you again alternator has been changed 3 times parts store's tell me that this system has external alt. so would it be located as part of the brain;s function

My confusion. Your previous post had me understanding you were saying the regulator was internal to the alternator. I have a 1999 Dakota and it has the internal regulator. I went back and looked at the wiring diagram for your model. The wiring diagram refers to your unit as a generator vice and alternator, and yes, it does get a controlling signal from the Power Control Module (PCM). It comes in on a dark green wire.

Alternator Wiring Diagram

Usually the alternators possess one thick white colored wire directly coming out of the battery positive terminal (+) which is around 8 mm (outer diameter) and connects the battery with alternator and white or black 3 wires connector which is inserted at the rear of the alternator. If you look carefully at the rear of the alternator you will find the embossed letters there. Some time the letter may vary depending upon model year of the vehicle. Normally the letters describe L= Alternator warning LAMP in the in the instrument panel of the speedometer. B= 12 Volts coming out of the ignition switch on the ON position. G= Ground or chassis ground.

Wiring diagram chevy need

Sounds to be internal voltage regulator in alternator failing. To verify this, have engine running and disconnect black negative wire from battery. If engine shuts off, replace alternator.

I typed in the wrong year i have a 1980 f 150 there was a short going from the solenoid to the starter.it fried the wires we replaced the wiring now it wont charge.can you give me some ideas on where the...

if it is not charging -- then the problem is the alternator. check the alternator ( at the alternator ) for output. if there is voltage there - then the problem is the wires between the alternator and the battery. this could be the voltage regulator ( if it is not a internally regulated alternator ). or it could just be a bad wire.
now if it turns out to be the alternator -- replace it with a internally regulated alternator,,, this will help simplify things in future diagnostics.

Need wiring diagram for 1967 camaro v8 changed from external regulator to alternator with internal regulator

I am assuming you are now using a 1976 style GM alt.
The most common and popular model.
You need one 10 gauge wire from the battery to the alternator output.
This can be run directly from the battery +.
Run a short 10 gauge wire from alt output to large wire at regulator plug on alt.
Run small wire on alt reg plug to Bat light wire.
A new alt regulator plug pigtail can be bought at any parts store and is recommended.

The existing regulator should have the connections marked.
One of those wires will be the bat light wire if needed.
If you have a amp meter or voltmeter in the vehicle.....use your existing large output wire (usually red) to hook up to the new alt output connection.
